    Default OTT-DYM Mission 2: 14 January 2016 – Coming and Going {Stumptonian}

The British were short of bombers in January 1916.
Several manufacturers had designs under construction but most were still several months away from delivery.
The Royal Aircraft Factory FE.2b and BE.2c were workhorses at the time, performing in many different roles, but neither of those were could really be called bombers.
The French had several capable machines, notably the Caudron G.4, but were not keen to share them with their British allies at this time.

This left the English scouring for anything they could get their hands on. One such ‘find’ was an Italian Ca.1
Early in the war, the Caproni company had tried to interest both the French and the British with this machine. Several had been sent to France for trials, but no one had taken a liking to them, at least not enough to place orders for production.

Hence the British came upon one that had been sitting in a secondary hanger for over a year. It was decided this machine would do in a pinch and the aircraft was “appropriated” with little or no fanfare.

The Ca.1 had been part of a small raid on a staging area in the rear of the German lines. The raid had comprised three R.A.F. FE.2b and the Caproni.
The Caproni became separated from the other aircraft after releasing its bomb load and was now cautiously making its way back to the British airfield.

ObLtn Bernhard Wienand tapped his riding crop on the table edge to get the attention of his fliers.
“Gentlemen … we have been given our orders. I will need two of you, so pay attention.”
The handful of airmen stop their conversations and look toward their commander.

Now using his crop as a pointer, he sweeps it across the map.
The enemy have sent a bombing raid deep into our territory, about 40 kilometers from here.
Our compatriots have managed to down several of the enemy aircraft, but there are stragglers returning close by here.”
And with a sharp tap he indicates a spot on the map. The mission is to intercept any enemy bomber in this area …”
He circles an area approximately 15 kilometers to the east. “They may have escorts, so be wary.”

“Huebner, I would like you to take Giesebrecht and show him how it’s done.”
Huebner already has three kills to his name – the first for the unit. Giesebrecht looks nervously at fellow rookie Karsten Rüdiger.
Rüdiger nods knowingly, still nursing his injured arm. Another few days and the sling should come off.

“Till is the master, so far.” Says Rüdiger. “Just be wary of our Anti-Aircraft units!”
Rüdiger’s injury had come at the hands of the AA units protecting a pair of balloons. “The imbeciles shoot at anything in the air!”
ObLtn Wienand had entered a formal complaint against the gunners.
A fly on the wall would have blushed at the expletives directed at the AA Unit commander.
“I do not believe AA will be an issue this time...” he assures his pilots.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That was a fun one to play, Peter. I especially liked the outcome this time.

I think I will let the BE.2C have both a forward and rear-firing Lewis next time I use one, and make the gunner miss a phase when switching.
'Cold Meat' was definitely served ...

    Thumbs up

Well you certainly enjoyed that "Cold Meat with special Salad" Pete!
What a stunning victory for your Eagles.
The B Deck throws up interesting results with lots of 1 & O but then Explosions & Fires.
Lady Luck has a lot to answer for.

My but that went well, Der Adler were on top form today. Huebner is flying like the ace I'm sure he will become.

They had the luck of the Devil with the British planes drawing all the bad cards, two BOOMS and fire as well. Duncan Moore was within an inch of being shot down making it a clean sweep for your lads.

Nice introduction to the Caproni, very believable and set the scene well allowing you to use the planes you had available to play the scenario out to its full potential.

It appears the plane set up had quite a big influence on the flying tactics, in the first game where the two opponents approached each other head on, once the bomber was through it was slow going for the Elll's to catch it up. With a faster plane the Caproni would probably have made it off the board.

In the second game because the Elll's approached at an angle it turned into a mixed dogfight straight away. Food for thought there and it sort of confirms my suspicions that my Rookie who hasn't learned to Imellmann yet is going to be at a big dissadvantage, unless he gets some sage advice from a more experienced pilot.

Oh no - my Rep Gun has jammed, sorry, you fully deserve Rep both for the outcome and a great narrative.
    Cheers

I'll try again .... I had a rather long reply composed on my phone and suddenly POOF it was gone!

Thanks, guys. It was looking like the Caproni was going to escape and I was wishing we had three mats to catch it.
Then a couple of slow moves allowed my E.IIIs to catch up. You are spot on, John. If I had used the XD decks the Ca.3 uses instead of the XB for the Ca.1 the bomber would have escaped. It also helped that the rear gun jammed.

I realized today that the 'curse of the new aircraft' struck several times in the last couple of scenarios.
Both the FE.2bs and the British Moranes, as well as the C.III in Mission 1 were 'first timers', as was the BE.2c in this one, with several drawing BOOMs.
Rüdiger's E.III drew one as well, but I had used his aircraft in a solo match a few years back when I was first learning the ropes with Black Ronin's and OldGuy59's solo movement cards. I am using 3 'B' decks, so it definitely comes down to the luck of the draw.

I thought Moore was 'toast' as well (pun intended) but then the fire went out with him one shy of destruction.

The poor BE.2c never even got a shot off. I will definitely use the twin-candlesticks/Strange mount combination next time I use one.
Looking forward to seeing how everyone else does with this one.

Superb Pete, a pacy story and action to match, well played mate, even if you did beat the pants off the bulldogs !

    Onkel says:

Excellent work my young Eagles, the definition of a successful mission, teamwork, shared kills and a party in the mess afterwards.
Pilot's badge earned by our rookie Giesebrecht, not a rookie much longer I feel, and Huebner a step closer to becoming our first ace. Prosit !

Rep gun jammed, I have replaced the Bulldog P2 but will wait to see what the next mission brings before adding any more crews.

A convincing win this time out for the Eagles. Nice turn around from last mission. Nice to see Hubner not hog all the kills and let the rookie get one.

It would have been a tighter match if your be had been able to switch gun positions.

Yes he basically 'stole' Giesebrecht's kill of the Caproni due to the Rookies Fire Last rule.

Question about the Caproni. Why didn't it shoot at Giesbrecht when he was off it's hind quarter, no rear gunner or a different firing arc?

Good timing for a jam for Giesebrecht. (Long range shots are not blocked by a tail unless there is a special rule for Capronis I forgot.)

That's my bad then. I mis-remembered the rule. Guess I had better re-read some of the lesser used ones ...

You would need to be intimate with the Two Ronnies sketches to be able to read that Pete. It was really aimed at Flash and his empty Rep gun. It was a take off of a Swedish Cafe ans used only letters of the alphabet to answer questions.

    Try this. Q: F U M ( have you ham) A: S V F M. ( Yes we have ham) next Q: MNX etc. Try it with a Swedish accent.

Yes I did. I think I saw it back in the mid 70s.
We used to enjoy The Two Ronnies.
I first saw them in the 60s on The Frost Report with John Cleese.

Yes Pete, I always looked up to John Cleese because I know my place, and anyway he is bigger than me.

The Caproni has no blindspot to the rear chaps....
Due to the raised position of the gun.

After digging out another Caproni with the additional rule sheet I see that I really messed this one up!

I will put it down to the airmen's unfamiliarity with the aircraft....

It's been a long time since I read the Caproni rule. Thanks for the reminder.

Guess we shall just have to accept that something else was amiss with that rear gun on the Caproni. Maybe the observer was actually feeling sick at the time. (Had to find a use for that emote someday )
Well done Pete. Another excellent tale of woe for the RFC and some great action. Congrats to your Eagles. Its a bad time for the RFC and the results show this fair and square. Your time will come
REP gun jammed right now, but "I'll be back", as the saying goes. REP inbound having unjammed the gun
