Default Family Game Store Wings of War/Glory, 7 February 2019

The government was open for business so traffic was heavy driving to the Family Game Store. Upon arrival we discovered it was Ladies Night at the mall so parking spaces were difficult to find. We did have a turnout of eight pilots which was very good.

AAR #1 - An unusual dogfight I had suggested in the announcement for the games that a battle with only two-seaters might be interesting. I provided four Roland C.IIs (flown by Todd, Bob, Will and myself) and a British Sopwith 1-1/2 strutter (flown by Jim), while Baltic Bob brought a Lithuanian Halberstadt (which he flew), a Latvian Sopwith 1-1/2 (flown by John) and an Estonian Sopwith 1-1/2 (flown by Craig). It may not have been historically accurate but it certainly was colorful. Below we see the three Baltic aircraft at the start of the battle.

We are getting into the thick of the battle.

Three of the airplanes are on fire; two on the German side. That isn't good.

However, I am the first plane out of the game by drawing the explosion card. Notice the Estonian airplane is now trailing smoke. These young pilot pick up bad habits.

Will's fire damage catches up to him, and he becomes a flaming meteor heading for No-Man's land.

Todd also meets a fiery death. He had lost his rear gunner but was doing alright damage-wise until the fire. His first A card was a 5 and his second A card was a 5 with pilot wounded. So his Roland crashed with both crew members already dead.

Can Bob take on four airplanes by himself? To be continued.

The fire is out on Baltic Bob's Lithuanian Halberstadt, but Bob is closing in the from the side to get him.

And Bob brings him down. Now it is only 3-1 odds.

However Bob also draws the dreaded Boom card (we were using two B decks). Still, notice all the zeroes he had been drawing. He might have shot down more of the Baltic aircraft if the game had continued.

AAR #2 - Italian Bombing Attack. I wanted to fly my new Caproni bomber from the Prague Raffle #1. So Todd supplied two Italian Hanriot HD.1s as escorts and the Austro-Hungarians were flying a Macchi M.5, Ufag, Phonix, and two Albatros fighters. I know one was an Albatros D.II, but I am not sure about the other one.

I have no idea why one of my escorts, the yellow Hanriot, is way off to the left, but three scouts are after him so I like it. Two scouts are headed for my bomber, with Todd's silver Hanriot is represented by a card under my bomber base.

I was very involved with this flight so I didn't get many photographs. At one point, my rear gunner was jammed so Will snuck alongside and played some stalls to keep pace with my slow moving bomber. However, he did mess up after my rear gunner become active. I was able to hit him with both the forward and rear gunners at 1/2 ruler range. Four B damage cards at once can be nasty. Still, things were not going well for my bomber. Eventually I drew the explosion card. It counted as 1/2 total bomber damage, but I was already over the halfway mark so that was the end of the game. We must train our wingmen to stay close and protect the bombers.

It is an interesting role being a wingman. He has to be close enough to the bomber to be useful, but not so close as to be a hazard. Then there is the question of how to be useful to the bomber when you only have a front gun and the opponents are pursuing from behind.

Interesting scenarios with some good photos as well.
Those custom damage cards look great - how do you tell A from B?

The cards are marked on the back with A or B. I didn't realize when I made them that they should have A or B labeled on the bottom of the front side. Live and learn.

The damage decks look great but I was wondering the same thing - I thought there was an A deck in use as there were 5's in the damage dealt out.
Great looking games by the way Robert, plenty of lead being thrown about !
