Thread: Cancon 19 - Summary

    Default Cancon 19 - Summary

Day 1 saw 4 games before lunchtime, and 2 large ones afterwards.

Scenes from the largest battle, involving 9 aircraft of different types. Only the Red Fokker Dr.I was an unrepainted official model. The Thai Spad XIII was a repaint of a Nexus model. The rest were Shapeways. The SE5a and Fokker D.VII were official aircraft, the Spad XII, Fokker D.VI, Camel NF, and Pfalz D.VIII were unofficial. Snoopy is of course sui generis.

Rules for the Spad XII armament were simple. B armament, but on the third card ( and only on the 3rd card each turn ) C armament. So no complications keeping track of reloading, and a bit more limiting to simulate use of the MG to find the range first. The effect was mainly on morale, knowing that the shot could do severe damage. An A armament would actually have been more effective in dealing out points, but far less effective in scaring the opposition. It only takes one 8 pt hit to make an enemy player's eyes water.

Day 2 - the morning saw me AWOL as my car's radiator had expired. But I gotta lift in for the after lunch session, while my son Andrew gallantly held the fort in the morning. I'll get a debrief on those two games from him later.

Only two games in the afternoon, the first an intercept mission, a barrage of 2 French and 1 Thai Spad XIIIs and a French Spad XII - with one lone RAF Camel Comic nightfighrer - attempting to intercept a Gotha and an R.VI on their way to bomb Paris. Some old friends from Cancons years back were in this, along with absolute novices.

The second was an 8 player mid-late 1918 scenario, introducing the Fokker D.VII while still having a venerable Albatros D.III and Fokker Dr.I, with an SSW D.III, vs a Bristol Fighter, Two Spad XIIIs and the ubiquitous Spad XII.

    Hmm...a fighter from Thailand?
I guess, that's what you call a "Thai Fighter".

Great mix of aircraft and color schemes, Zoe It's great to see your photos from the convention. You always represent the action (and the game itself) so well - glad Andrew was on hand to cover while you sorted out your radiator issues

    All the best,
    Matt

More from the bomber intercept game.

The BARCAP tactics were to have the Thai Fighter harrass the Gotha so it couldn't provide mutual support to the R.VI, then concentrate in a pack attack on the Giant. The tactics worked well, but even then many of the attackers got severely knocked about, and it was only a Boom card drawn by the R.VI just before it exited past the barrier zone and onto Paris that stopped it.

Very true, that. Excellent summary, thanks for the post.

It's great to see a couple of photos of the folks involved too. One of the nicest parts of the weekend was meeting fellow players, especially where it meant that a face could be put to a forum name.

Thanks again, Zoe, for organising a most enjoyable event. The computer tells me I have jammed rep cannons, as otherwise I'd send some over.

Day 3 - a change of pace, from 1918 to 1916. Monday, the last day, is much quieter, with the hucksters starting to evacuate from 2pm, and most games finished and packed up by 4pm rather than 6pm.

A small game started that was terminated early as more players arrived, and soon we had an 8 player stoush involving an Albatros D.II, an Albatros C.III, a Fokker E.III and Halberstadt D.II, vs an FE2b, a pair of DH2s and a Nieuport 11. Followed by a 4 player intercept mssion, DH2 and Nieuport 11 vs Albatros D.II and C.III as described in Baxter's fine AAR.

The Nieuport 11 showed it's fragility yet again. The Albatros CIII is something of a monster in 1916. As fast as it's opponents, as heavily armed at the front, a sting in the tail equal to opponents front attacks, and just as many hit points. The Albatros D.II with two front guns and lots of hits is just as bad. DH2 and Halberstadt D.II when used correctly (using sideslips to tighten turns) are surprisingly maneuverable, the Halberstadt having a slight edge in sturdiness. The FE2b is dangerous though, that wide front firing arc making it the equal of an Albatros C.II despite only having the one gun. Still competitive a year later, though by 1918 it was just too slow and clumsy. In 1916, a fearsome opponent, take it on at your own risk.

Remember, it was a stray bullet from an FE2b observer in early 1918 that gave Manfred von Richthofen the headwound he never fulllly recovered from, and led to him making the uncharacteristic blunders that killed him.

Even though an FE2b and a pair of DH2s look like a mother pterodactyl with two young'uns.

The game ended with the FE2b and DH2s victorious over the last survivor, a Halberstadt, as it fled for the table edge. It almost made it. Victory to the lattice tails.

Nice to see the early war types in the thick of the action again Zoe.

Great to see the early birds in action, Zoe, especially with so many Gitterschwaenze in the air As you say, they take a bit more 'flying', but they are lots of fun. Glad to see you chose not to throw in a Roland - they are almost too beastly...

Looks like you had another successful foray at Cancon

    All the best,
    Matt

    Hi Zoe,
Will you please forward me the names of people needing medals, along with the type and what year they have hit.
I will then issue them all in one go.
