Thread: Thanks for the Solo Rules

Default Thanks for the Solo Rules

    Hi All,

Due to moving around my wargaming circle has dwindled and is pretty much solitaire these days. I've only been playing Wings of Glory for just over a week. My first game was with my wife (she likes the planes and will play again). Since then I managed to come across this forum and the links to solo rules while chasing down sources of various aircraft and have given those rules a try for a few one-on-one encounters. I really enjoyed them (both Richard Bradley's and Dave's D8 versions - I haven't tried Blackronin's but they look good too) and they will add a lot to my enjoyment of the game. So many thanks to all of those who've made their efforts on solo rules freely available to others.

Glad you enjoyed them Paul, if you find any errors in my D.8 charts or have a query drop me a PM. Cheers Dave

    Will do, Dave.

I like the D8 option as 7 options makes it a wee more challenging to guess the 'solo' plane's movement. I first tried the D8 charts playing a Nieuport 17 versus an Albatross D.III. That's was lots of fun. I played 2 games that ended up 1 win to 1 loss. I also played a Sopwith Snipe versus a 'solo' Phonix D.I with a sniper-ace. I got shot down pretty quickly but the 'solo' ace choosing two cards - a 5 and a 0 and discarding the 0 - can hurt. LoL

I also looked a scout versus bombers - the Phonix versus a Caproni. I used the solo charts for both planes just to see how it would go. It seemed to me that it would work best playing the scout(s) versus a 'solo' bomber and any escort with some intervention on the bombers movement (i.e., there was a situation in the game when the Phonix was out of position and the Caproni logically would have headed to its destination - the other side of the matt - but the chart gave it 3 turns).

I'm looking forward to an order of planes due soon which will give me the option to play 2 planes of the same type per side with one side using the charts.

    Cheers

    Paul

I developed the D8 charts along similar lines to Joaquim's I expect but I needed the extra options to take account of the manoeuvre options of some models ie where they have three side slips or three ninety degree turns I have catered for that in the charts, though it makes the less manoeuvrable ones a little more predictable but I supposed in real life they were.

With things like bombers it's best to aim the plane to it's target and let it run, otherwise it will try and take on a scout which is likely to end.... badly !
That means a lot of 12/1 moves but they are not necessarily straight, as you know. You can also come into the table at an angle or via a waypoint which will necessitate using other parts of the clock. Same method can be employed with some two seater missions. Mission focus is key to winning a game - and running away too sometimes !
People will tell you that I often say "You have to be the I in AI" and it's true in both cases ! Do what is best for a model in a given circumstance and you shouldn't go far wrong.

I did notice that and I did like those additions.

Yes, that seems the best way to go with bomber solitaire games. Will try it out more seriously when the 2nd matt arrives...which should be any day now.

Well you know the old joke..."Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space, 'cause there's b..... all down here on Earth." And the follow-up..."On the other hand, it's a goldmine if you're looking for stupidity".

Thanks, Dave. I took a break at lunch time (the joy of working from home) and got two games done in 20 minutes (both Albatross D.III versus a Sopwith 1 1/2 Comic). Of course, it shortens the game when you crash and both planes draw a '10'.

    Hi Sam.

I noticed it before but hadn't got around to checking it out. Did so now. Seems like fun. Can one start at any time? And, if so, do you start with scenario 1 and try to catch up or with what ever is the latest scenario?
