Default More on the BBC War of the Worlds

As some of you may already know the BBC is doing a new version of the War of the Worlds. For the first time it will be set in England, where the original novel was set, and it will be set in 'period' but not quite as early as the original book. The series is being set around WW1 (yes!) with the British troops wearing WW1-style khaki uniforms and using "Old Bill" type buses as infantry transports. So… it appears that the new game and the Beeb have had the same idea and at about the same time.

This YouTube film appears to be a third-party effort but includes a lot of production stills of the filming of the actors.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnG0x5fz8nI

It does not include the Martians as, I presume, they will be CGI and the Beeb has not released much of the CGI material yet.

However a tripod is shown here:

    More about the mini-series here:

    Thanks for posting these, Barry.
Been hoping someone would make a War of the Worlds set in the orignal time period.
This one looks 'close enough' and will match the T&T premise.

Certainly hope I will get this on BBC America

Thanks Barry, now to resurrect my Mars enthusiasm, I will be tossing the Ares bits and create the game more in this direction. The Ares Martians never seemed right to me. If and when they come to pass, I will likely use parts but now in a steam-punk Victorian flavour. Off to the drawing board, and the original book . . . might need to bring the Doctor in too . . . sorry Ares.

A friend once gave me an annotated local map of the Horsall Common area which he had produced. It is still possible to follow the early course of the battle from the book as nearly all the buildings which H.G. Wells referred-to are still there, it has not been redeveloped extensively.

These clips look just the thing, Barry! I agree with the setting, as others have mentioned. Having re-read the original book last year, along with the authorized sequel, I really like the look they've chosen for costume and scenery. And the tripods look more in line with the books, too. I look forward to see what Clipper's renewed enthusiasm causes him to create

The latest thing I found was US footage of test firings against a captured Panther tank in WW2 so I posted that on TMP!

When someone gets a good idea others try to copy it.

It has always been the case in Hollywood, and also in other Studios, that a script is circulated around by the writer, trying to get someone to pick it up, so very quickly everyone becomes aware of it.

When a company agrees to buy the rights to it, it is then "off the market" to the others, some of whom may well have started spending money on their own background prep in case they were to become the eventual "owners" of the project.
If a Studio/Company has enough interest, or capital already invested, then then can only progress if the obtain a new, different script from another writer.

Thus we see 'groupings' of similarly-themed films being worked on/released at around the same time..............

The most obvious one I recall is the "Baby" grouping, when cinemas received "Look Who's Talking", "Baby Boom", "She's Having a Baby", "Raising Arizona" and a couple more all within a very short space of time.

"300" also spawned "Gates of Fire", which was subsequently delayed.

    There are numerous other examples.

Although I like the two actors in the Fox version, I am less enthused that it is being set in a modern-day, post-Apocalyptic period. I would rather see a reimagining done in the time in which the novel is set. Although, I do like the original version with Gene Barry, and it is set in the 50s... The Tom Cruise version left me a bit non-plussed...

In any event, the renewed enthusiasm for the story should be good. Now I just have to dig out that resin and metal tripod model that Clipper found and built (after his construction thread from last year, which is splendid, I snagged one for myself) - time to get some Martian action going

    All the best,
    Matt

I should point out that as H.G. Wells has been dead more than 70 years (the legal cut off point for copyright) the book is now out of copyright and anyone can do a War of the Worlds project. The only book to remain in copyright is Peter Pan as Great Ormond Street Hospital gets income from licensing the story due to J.M. Barrie gifting it to the GOSH in perpetuity. The one studio which attempted to flout the Peter Pan proviso found themselves shamed into a settlement with GOSH.

Copyright also explains why we get lots of Sherlock Holmes projects, it is out of copyright. Wait until the 70th anniversary of Tolkein's death to see how many Lord of the Rings versions will turn up.

So the family, of say Tolkien, can’t keep renewing the copywrite? That seems unfair. Or whatever “enterprise” is set up to run or distribute the material? That seems criminal.

Much of J.R.R. Tolkein's work has been edited by his son Christopher. They may manage to extend the copyright that way.

My comment about the 'Invisible Man' was intended humourously.

It was announced on today's B.B.C. programme 'Points of View' that the B.B.C. will be screening 'The War of the Worlds' t.v. series in November 2019.

Apparently, it has already been broadcast in some other parts of the world.

According to Wiki (if that is to be believed)
The series is intended to be released over three episodes.
The War of the Worlds first premiered on T+E in Canada between 6 and 20 October 2019, and was broadcast on TVNZ 1 in New Zealand in two parts between 13 and 20 October 2019.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment is responsible for the international distribution of The War of the Worlds miniseries. It has been sold to major European countries and African territories (but no mention of the USA on there yet though...?)

    Just another thought.
This could not have come at a better time to boost Ares sales. Maybe we need to include T&T at some of our upcoming shows to raise the game profile?

We put it out at Colours & it seemed to go down well, hopefully Neil will be able to put it on at Beachhead if he's available but sadly little to no interest from the chaps at Entoyment so far.

Just saw some other clips on youtube.. the actual martians themselves (outside of the tripod) look terrible... they act like animals and have no limbs etc.. how on earth did they construct technology etc?

Best way to drum up some enthusiasm at Entoyment would be to give it a run out on a Wednesday evening Dave.

Yeah but then I'd have to have more than a little interest in it Andy !
I will ask the chaps again maybe but no one I've spoken to so far has any real interest in it.

I am taking a better view of the BBC series...
It appears that HMS Thunderchild DOES appear in some form or another:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8Ld8mvC2Y8

And they are also featuring the 'black smoke' (poison gas) from the book.
Given that HG Wells was writing at the end of the 19th century he managed to predict the use of poison gas in 1915.

Whilst grounded, again, I just finished the Massacre of Mankind, yes, again. I think I will have a go at a more massive game. Gearing up the elves production for 20 tripods and a sizeable Martian conclave, say 3 or 4 cylinders and a few factory sites to knock out, just happen to be putting the finish on 10 triplane. Thinking 6' x 6' . . . might get my land ships involved! Must be my meds . . .

Apologies as I am posting from my phone Ana can't copy the link, but it looks like Fox are making a TV series too but a more modern look. Not sure which era but defo after HG Wells original.
