Thread: Pearl Harbor

    Default Pearl Harbor

My wife & I are in Hawaii for a few nights after a couple of weeks in Japan visiting her relatives.

She's not interested (& will be shopping), but I'm soooo looking forward to going to Pearl & seeing
what there is to be seen. Luckily the US shutdown hasn't affected it - or I would have been gutted!

Unfortunately the Arizona Memorial is closed indefinitely due to structural issues - but there's still
plenty to see - especially the AVIATION Museum! WOOT!

Almost stationed in Hawaii but went to Okinawa instead. Where I was stationed was the invasion beach and up the hill was Yontan airfield. The wife practiced driving there. Funny how many places I was stationed had historical sites and I only saw a few of them. The Alamo was someplace I wanted to see and thanks to the Army I did get to see it.

    Bob,
    I LOVE Okinawa!
We went there right before we were married. Like Japan - just a more chilled out version...

Forgot to add - for the rest of you...
Yes, hopefully photos will follow. (If our technology curse doesn't mess with me again. Since leaving NZ,
multiple tech issues, including, but not limited to: - internet access issues, my phone RIP, DEAD, ,
my wife losing her phone - luckily handed in to security! etc etc...)

Phillip there is a show here called MYSTERIES OF THE ABANDON and there was a show about that island. It was actually a coal mine. From your photo you can see how it looks like a battleship. Nice shot.

Spent 5 years on Okinawa and as you I loved it except for the humidity and typhoons.

    Hey Bob,
Definitely had humidity - but no typhoons whilst we were there!

Correct on the coal mine front - apparently it was high quality coal too.
Attached is the picture I took of the Japanese battleship that was being
built & one of the workers commented that the island & the battleship
    looked similar.
After the WW1 arms limitation treaty, the battleship was never finished.
Apparently, at one time, the island had the highest population density
    on the planet.

Great pics. Did you do the below decks tour of the Missouri? I liked the bit where you are in a machinery filled room and a press of one button on a big grey box fired the guns. The person who did that would not have seen the target or anything!

    Hiya Gary,
Yes, I did go below decks - but not as part of an organised tour. I wandered around by myself for about an hour.
    Loved it.
I also took some pictures of a couple of Models at Fort DeBussy. So - here's some more photos I forgot to include earlier. (Including a biplane model - the only photo of several I took of it & a DH4 model. Really difficult photography conditions. )

Thank you, Sir. Intersting picture. Didn't know about this island.

Next visit to Japan is in 2021.

The Yamato museum at Kure is important part of the program.

Thank you for the Pearl Harbour pictures.

The WW 2 US forces in the pacific have all my favour.

When I was on the ship I didn't realize how steep the angle was from the front turret to the bow.

This a photo of the SS J. W. Brown, a WWII Liberty ship. It is one of two still active as a museum. The other, SS O'Brian, is on the west coast. The Brown does cruises a few time a year out of Baltimore and I have been on them twice. Pretty neat being on a ship that is 75 years old and still promotes the history of these ships.

Not as big as the BB's or the Liberty ship but when I was in Halifax the HMCS Sackville was docked there at the Maritime museum. It is a corvette that did convoy escort in the North Atlantic. After being on this little ship I couldn't imagine 90 men on this little ship being bounced around like a cork in the Atlantic ocean. I salute the men that crewed these ships.

If cruel seas comes out with a corvette here is an example of a paint job you could do.

Philip I was watching an episode of Mysteries of the Abandoned today and one segment was about Battleship Island. I had seen I before but I like that show. They were giving the history of the island and said it was abandoned in 1974 after all the coal was gone. Since then it just has tourists and has been used as movie sets. They mentioned the James Bond movie SKYFALL. So a few hours later I am watching the SYFY channel and what movie is on..yes SKYFALL and there he was on the island. A nice aerial shot of the island.

Then last week I was watching Cities of the Underworld and where was he...Okinawa looking at caves that you get into and the USS Duncan that was sunk up north by NAGO. I guess things have really changed since I was stationed there as they showed him in Naha and they had a monorail.

    Holy cow!
The theory of synchronicity at work eh Bob!
Yeah - I need to see Skyfall again since seeing the island. I've seen every single Bond movie - but
    don't remember that.

You will know it when you see it. Its the part when Bond is tied up by the blonde guy (ex agent).
