"So" asked Uncle "what do you think of our latest bunch of lads?" "Christ! they all look so bloody young" replied Reg from the lofty heights of his 22 years. "Look like they all should still be at Collage or University!"
"Well" laughed Uncle "They were last year but now they are what the RFC are sending us to see off the old Hun!"
"They are certainly keen as mustard. After we gave out the roster & briefed the chaps detailed for the mission they insisted having a photograph taken with me to celebrate" chortled Uncle.

"He is only 19 but worked as a Stockman on the family property at Cootamundra in New South Wales so he knows how to ride & shoot.
Finished in the top 3 of his Flying School course. Desperately wants to be a Scout Pilot but will have to be satisfied with flying a Gunbus until he proves himself" stated Uncle.

"Well" commented Reg "We have given him a good gunner in AM2 Macbeth so that should help & with the importance of this mission to neutralise those German observation balloons you have rostered
Lt "Lofty" Hill & AM1 Austin-Green in the BE with that front Lewis firing off to the left for the pilot & 2nd Lt. "Frosty" Snow in the Morane to try to keep the Hun off their tail. I told them all to get a good nights sleep & provided we don't have a fog or mist I want them airborne by 8.30am".

    The Mission

The sky was surprisingly clear the next morning so the 3 British Aircraft turned into the wind, opened their throttles & took off towards the front lines.

On the German side of the lines at the Eagles Aerodrome Ltn Victor Schoenebeck yawned & stretched as he walked towards his Fokker Eindekker waiting for him like a crouched lion. Off to his left the crew of Obltn Helmet Dahlmann the "Emil" & his Observer Ltn Hans Schobinger were already mounted in their Aviatik CII.
Schoenebeck climbed into his cockpit, the mechanic swung the prop & the rotary engine burst into life.
The two German aircraft took off & flew towards their Balloon line, their task was to protect their Drachins from marauding British Aircraft.

The 3 British Aircraft climbed steadily as they approached the German Trenches. They had been warned repeatedly during yesterdays briefing that the Balloons would be strongly defended by German Anti Aircraft Guns fondly known as "Archie"!

Sure enough as they approached the Balloon line a sharp crack came from below as the first Hun gun tried a long range shot at Snow's Morane but it was way off target!

On the far side of the flight another AA battery had a shot at Hill's BE 2c but again the aim was way off.

As Schoenebeck's Fokker flew below the yellow balloon the closest AA Gun had the temerity to shoot at the German aircraft. Schoenebeck shook his fist,, rocked his wings in case the gunners had not noticed the large black cross's on the white squares. "Dumbkoff's" he cursed! "Blind Schwine!" Fortunately they missed!

The British aircraft were now in range of both the German Aircraft & the Balloons. Hamish MacBeth got off a telling burst from his Lewis which caused the rudder on the Aviatik to jam completely whilst Lofty Hill hit the balloon.
Off to the left hand side the Morane & Fokker exchanged shots but the only result was a jammed gun on the Morane.

The Gunbus & the BE continued to shoot at the Balloon while the BE again came under fire from the Archie battery closest to it. Again their aim was way off.

As Snow's Morane approached the balloon with its gun still jammed it was shot at by the AA Gun however as Jon grunted "Glad their having an off day".

The German gunners continued to try long range shots but to no avail. However the Balloon Winch crews alert to the danger from the British aircraft had already commenced winching down their charges.

The Aviatik which could only fly in a straight line because of its jammed rudder took a shot at the Vickers but it was just out of range thanks to Dusty's manoeuvring.

Algie Austin-Green fired at the balloon causing it to issue black smoke but there was no sign of any fire & his Lewis then jammed.

Jon Snow had preformed an Immlemann, after unjamming his gun, to attack the yellow balloon but his shots caused no visible damage.

The German AA gun on the far side now again fired at the Grey Fokker much to Schoenebeck's consternation perhaps confusing it with the Morane. He would certainly be taking this up with Higher Authorities when he returned to base!

The middle Archie gun now took aim at the Gunbus & although it came close it caused no damage. Dusty was now getting used to the smoke & noise of the AA Guns that seemed to be all "Froth & Bubble" but in a very noisy way.

On the otherside of the action the German gunners finally got their aim right & a direct hit resulted in Jon Snow copping a red hot piece of shrapnel in his left thigh. "Bugger" that hurts" he cried as he tried to keep the damaged aircraft on an even keel. "Better head for the Barn in case I get light headed & pass out. Don't want to disappoint Uncle by loosing one of his precious Moranes!" His mood was not improved by Archie having another go at him from another AA position but this time their aim was off.

During this time the Winch crews were continuing to lower the balloons as quickly as possible & the fire had not flared up to cause severe damage at this time & the Fire on the Fokker E.III had also puttered out.

As Frosty flew towards his home aerodrome the Avitak took a shot but it missed.

With the Balloons now safe on the ground albeit both damaged it was time for the tired crew of the Gunbus to head back to Bentangles where Frosty Snow would be waiting for them & hoping for news of the crew of the crashed Be2c.

    OBSERVATIONS

Well what a marathon that ended up being. A highly enjoyable one but a marathon made very difficult with problems of the app trying to upload multiple photos from the halfway point of the mission. I have had that problem before & it seems to be triggered by posting large numbers of images.

I flew the aircraft at the Altitude required but made the British Aircraft climb to the same altitude as the Germans as they flew toward the front.
All Lewis guns were restricted to 3 bursts before requiring a drum change. No inherent Ace skills were used in this scenario. I flew the Gunbus & all others used Dave's D8 charts.
Thanks to Neil for an action packed mission although those double B Decks threw up an amazing number of Zeros & Jambs.
Just take a look at the Damage Draw for the Fokker Eindekker before it finally went down to the Boom card from Hamish MacBeth!

Good show Barry, what a wiz bang report! Your Aviatik looks splendid, as do all your kites.

And Schonebeck's E.III ended up with more zeroes than my French Morane!

I hope your BE lads come out alright, but if they end up guests of the Kaiser I am sure the local KEK will entertain them for the night in the mess.

    Thanks Carl!

Well done Barry a great show, the planes look great, I especially like the grey Elll but all the way through I was thinking that the Morane looked better than mine, however was too engrossed in the story to look closely so didn't notice the rigging lines and realized you must have repainted it. The change to the glossy Ares finish is quite noticeable even on the small screen I'm using, at least I hope that's what you've done.

Not such a successful mission but at least you peppered the balloons, hope the BE2 crew get home safely, was this is first time out? or is it an older plane?

A good introduction with the airfield and pilots, sets the scene well.
    Cheers

Great AAR Baz, probably not the result you wanted but a thoroughly enjoyable yarn from your tabletop. Some tough results too I see.

    Uncle says:

Well that didn't go as well as we hoped but you chaps gave it your best & some gave it their all. Poor Austin-Green didn't have a chance.
At least Macbeth managed to extract a small measure of revenge by downing the Fokker..

Looking over the report it seems that Snow was FRTB so the +1 VP goes to the Hun.. so that's 14-2 to them
Try to remember to record the kills even if a goose egg & count the WIC in your E&E tally.

Wow Baz, seems like the EIII had more zeros than the Japanese airforce in WW2 I thought Carl drew a lot but that takes the biscuit I believe. Great action - pity about the result, but with so many gun jams and misses about its hardly surprising. Hope the survival rolls process doesn't hurt too much REP on the way and thanks for another great read

    What a wizard show Baz.
I'm not surprised that you're tired with that Marathon.
Mine took five hours and you have much more action than I.
Loved the shot of Bentangles Drome and the pics of your pilots. I must do something similar when I get the chance.
I'll sport you one in the Mess tonight old chap.
Bye the bye, seen anything of your opo Triggers yet.According to my notebook I'm due to meet him in October this year, so probably next year in our game time.

What a great start to the campaign Baz. Very realistic and could have gone either way. By the way I think the Germans claim the point for the Morane leaving the field before the end.

Have to check as I'm on phone.

    Cheers
G'day John & thanks for the Rep.
No the BE & its mate have been around for about 5 years. They were the second lot of Shapeways I brought. They figured in some of the club AAR's prior to OTT.
Actually the Morane has not been repainted but when I put on the British decals I overcoated with Matt varnish to seal them as well as the rest of the plane & it took the shiny look away.
I rigged 2 Moranes including a Shapeways Parasol & all 3 Fok D,III's using paintbrush hairs & supa glue

    Kyte.
    Thanks for the Shout Rob!
Sorry I have not seen or heard from "Sticky" Triggers for some time.
Last I knew he was involved in some secret project with GHQ, something about designing a way to shoot through your prop without smashing it to bits.

Wow! What a marathon for your boys (and ours, too)
I read the AAR last night but held off my comments until you posted the Tally.

I can foresee a whole lotta zeros for my forthcoming outing.

Your AAR is exhaustive and really gives us a feel of the slog it took to complete the mission.

Parries and thrusts - nicks and swipes - hopes and hopes dashed.
    Your tale has them all.

And in the end - Victory!

The die rolls for the Butcher's Tally must have been stressful indeed. I know you usually hand off to Dave and I can understand why.

Finally, a salute for AM1 Algy Austin-Green, a brave airman whose demise, sadly, points out the well-known short-comings of the BE.2

I have, I think, wisely, changed my planned use of said aircraft for my Bulldogs in this mission in favour of the FE.2b to give them half a chance.

REP coming, and a virtual Single Malt for you, Mein Herr
(I think we need another smiley)

P.S. Great looking kites on both sides - really brings out the colour of your AAR

Thanks for your very kind words Pete & the Rep!
I do love these early war aircraft & will keep fielding some BE's as the Brits had to until better kites became available. They were not called "Fokker Fodder" for nothing!

    Great looking kites, Baz!

Wonderful report, though there sure seems to be a lot of zeros in that B deck! Archie proved to be more than a little precocious... especially once you unveiled that catastrophic boom card! Well-flown, nonetheless and an enjoyable read!

    Thank you Uncle.
I thought Snow got a +1 for being over its start line before both balloons were shot down as per Neil's admin notes. (?)

Also I was going to add the -1 for Lofty Hill but got confused in the "includes wound sustained from crash result between 3 or 8 = -1 wound".

Again Thanks for sorting me out!

Just to clarify that point on the E&E modifiers Baz:
Wounded: -1 per wound--------- Includes wound sustained from crash ie a crash result between 3 or 8 = -1WIC

It is -1 per wound sustained in combat and -1 for a wound sustained as a result of a crash roll.

So, if you were SD-ET / WIA and rolled a crash result of between 3 & 8 your pilot would sustain a further injury. (WIC - wounded in crash)
When you roll for his E&E that modifier is added to the calculation: -1WIA (for the combat wound); -1WIC (from the crash landing); -1BEL, in this example.

    Hope that helps.

Whew, tough bout. The dastardly Hun saved their sausages for another day. The Hun AA gunners luckily were not very good for all the shots they took. Sadly when they did hit they did serious damage to your Doggies.

Love your rigged planes and the camo Gunbus.
