A true account of battle over the skies of Italy, as told by a Pfalz D.VIII pilot to his Enkelkinder many years after the fact
Part I
Jury-rigged repairs in preparation for impending battle.
The scene is set for Entente powers to shoot down a Central Powers balloon.
Some time later, once random passers-by are coaxed into playing with little aeroplanes, the Red Baron and the Pfalz move to intercept two scouts and a flying dog house.
The rocket-armed Frenchman inflicts two points of damage on the D.VIII.
The little rocket man remembers his mission, while the Germans indulge in a dog fight. The gun of the No.12 Entente scout jams while firing on the Pfalz.
The Frenchman draws closer to his target.
The Germans remember their job, and are reinforced from behind the balloon.
The Frenchman makes his first pass, with little discernible effect.
The Red Baron peels off, target fixation triggered by catching sight of his bitterest foe...
... Snoopy! The rocketeer flips to boldly engage his two vaguely-muddled pursuers.
A cinematic close-up of an epic contest.
The No.12 casually wanders back into the fray, while calamity unfolds below the balloon.
The 13th photo, unlucky for some...
... but not the Pfalz, which escapes a high-speed aerial collision unscratched.
