Thread: Chasing a Gotha

  1. #1

    Default Chasing a Gotha

    This scenario was chosen to use planes that we had not flown for some time, in particular the Bristol F2B.

    Aircraft
    Central Powers: Gotha G.V [B/B 27] {Flown using the random draw of manoeuvre cards. The explosion card will be taken as half points.}
    Entente: attackers – 2 x Bristol F2B [B/B 16] {We chose to make the Bristols with B guns front and back to make the game more even.}

    Victory conditions:
    Central Powers: The Gotha reaches the other end of the table.
    Entente: The Gotha is downed before reaching the end of the table.

    Starting positions: The Gotha starts at one end of the table. One of the Bristols, Bristol A, starts on the side about a ¼ of table length from Gotha. Other Bristol starts at the other end of the table. This arrangement was used so that the Gotha could deal with one Bristol at the start, rather than having two attacking at once.

    [A note regarding AAR photographs: each photograph is marked with the manoeuvre number. This enables viewers of the AAR to see how much time has passed between photographs.]

    The Gotha caught out the closest Bristol, Bristol A, with its left turns which meant it avoided contact.

    Meanwhile the distant Bristol is making up ground getting ready to engage the Gotha.

    [And despite the intention in planning the game] the two Bristols get to the Gotha at the same time! However the Gotha is able to make use of both its front and rear guns.

    The Gotha is safe, despite losing a front gunner, and can fire the rear gun. One Bristol is too close, and the other pilot is dealing with a jammed gun.

    The let off for the Gotha didn’t last long as it gets a blast from the rear gun of one Bristol, but can fire at the other.

    It’s all jam and distance!

    With the gun finally clear, Bristol A can shoot at the flaming Gotha, and receive nothing in return.

    However, that joy is short-lived when Bristol A cannot get the Gotha with either front or rear guns, but the Gotha’s rear gun is active.

    The second Bristol has caught up now and can give some lead to the Gotha.

    Having taken a pummelling from the Gotha, Bristol A turns towards it, only to collide. The Gotha gets off a shot at the other Bristol, before crashing to the ground. Miraculously Bristol A sustains no damage in the collision!

    We were a bit worried the Gotha was going to get home. It didn’t have far to go when it drew the ‘boom’ card. It already had 16 damage points, which is more than half of its 27.

    We played a second game (without taking photographs) in which one of the Bristols got the ‘boom’ card in the first exchange of fire. So it goes both ways.

    Nice AAR. Those 'boom' cards can be nasty.
    So how many books are in your personal library?

    Pilot of Bristol A was a clumsy clod.

    Thank you for a good A.A.R., Doug. Are those whispy clouds printed on your battlemat because they look very realistic?

    Thanks Doug - good entertainment for you and for us Not easy bringing down any bomber with just two aircraft - so I guess crashing into it was a shot to nothing. Thanks for sharing.

    Yes, the clouds are part of the mat. I am always surprised when I look at AAR photographs I have taken how realistic the clouds look. I am not as conscious of the clouds when I am busy playing a game!
    It is Baxter's mat, so he could give you more information if you are interested.

    Could have gone either way.

    That mat is stunning. Great AAR ... nice to see the Bristols in action. Any game with a pair of Bristols is fun...

    So you keep stressing Chris.
    Try two pairs of Bristols next time.
    You may find yourself up gunned again.
    Rob.

    Bye the way should that not be a brace of Bristols.
