Thread: Hawker Hunter

    Default Hawker Hunter

Saw a story today about a civilian flying a Hawker Hunter in an Air National Guard exercise. The plane crashed, the pilot bailed out and was rescued. Pilot safe but loss of another vintage plane. I just wondered what a 50 year old jet was doing in a Hawaii ANG exercise ? I do remember when I was on Okinawa, 80-85, I was on Kadena AB and saw a plane landing. I was used to seeing F-15's takeoff and land but this plane looked different. Then I saw it was an F86 Saber jet. Wish I had a camera so I could have taken a pic of that.

Thank you for that explanation and the link, David. I had not heard of ATAC before. It must be the ultimate in 'outsourcing'.

I thought this thread was going to be about Lanoe in persuit of a Zeppelin.

Thanks David. I too never heard of ATAC. I never could figure out what the F-86's did. I took a passenger flight out of Naha, which is also a JSDF AB, and was surprised to see Starfighters sitting on the tarmac. As we taxied it was like an aircraft museum seeing some of the planes the Japanese flew. This was in 1984 so I am sure many have been retired.

    I'd read both those threads.
