Default Reporting for duty from Michigan

    Hi all!

I got lucky and was able to join in one of Peter's games at Fall In! and really enjoyed the game. I played in the balloon busting game and even though I got shot dowm twice, I could not stop having fun. Its a delightful game that is challenging and entertaining and best of all, no models to paint!!

So even though I had a goal of no new games from Fall In!, this one is a keeper.

I've been miniatures gaming since 1998, starting the usual way, GW via Fantasy and 40K. Several years ago I got into X-Wing, and have enjoyed that immensely. I mainly game historicals now, from Bolt Action to Flames of War to SAGA to Muskets & Tomahawks. WW1 aerial gaming fits right in.

    Now... What to buy first?

Whatever you can get your hands on to start - then you will gradually 'collect them all'

I can't think of a better introduction to this game than with one of Peter's scenarios.

Welcome to the Aerodrome Harry. So glad to have you in one of my games at Fall In. Sorry to be the one to give you the first free taste. Addiction? We don't really like to call it that but very few quit on their own.

What to get? Just about everything you can. Many planes go out of availability from retailers. Ebay has most but some are way over priced.

Hope you can find some pilots near you. Sounded like John isn't too far away.

On behalf of the pilots based over the pond in Dear old Blighty, a warm welcome to you Harry.

G'day Harry & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.
Like you I came Via GW & 40 K until they P'd me off with constant rule book changes & Codex creep!
I had always been fascinated by WW1 Aero History so I fit right into Wings & just LOVE it.

Thanks for the welcome. This seems to be a great community. Welcomes from all over!

Definately John. Maybe over Christmas break when my son is home from college. He'd love this!

Glad you enjoyed the game and came into the site. You never know where you might find planes. Marc had a great score at the flea market with the WWI planes so just keep looking and you can find them.

Harry I just checked and Miniature Market has some WWI planes on their site. They are selling for the normal price so you may want to check them out.

Welcome to the group. What part of Michigan are you from? A small group gets together once a month at the Toy Soldier shop in Royal Oak (Oakland County).

As for where to start. it seems around here that WWI is more popular though we do get in WWII games every now and then. This means one of the 2 plane starter packs for WWI or the BoB box set for WWII are good starting places. As for planes in my area Toy soldier shop in Royal Oak has a thin selection of planes mostly WWI. This Website also has a store with a few in it. Then there are the ever generous members here that may send you PM's with offers for some of their spares.

Thanks for tips and welcomes. When do you guys get together and play at MTS? its a bit of a drive, but not awful. Idod see that MM has a decent selection, and some here as well. Just waiting to absorb the damage from Fall In and order the duel pack and a plane or 4. I think I will start in 1917 and branch from there.

I do have a question. Do the pilots matter? I see that there are different pilots and paint for each aircraft. Other than completing the set do pilots have bonuses?

    Thanks!

You can give out ace skills as you see fit for historical pilots or for your own scenarios. Occasionally I give ace skills in the games In run but not as a rule. I myself have forgotten to use ace skills when I have had them!

Only in the newer plane packs do you get ace skill cards connected to the pilot or plane. The latest set of Nieuport 17s gave you an option of shooting at a plane above you when overlapped. There are a few ace skill card sets but not a whole lot of pilots are covered.

    Hi Harry.
Welcome to the Aerodrome. You will find a great group of pilots here. If you ever get to Milwaukee and/or Chicago give me a hollar, we game every Saturday.

    Have fun and enjoy gaming.

One of the guys running games here tends to hand out random skills but you can play without them. Biggest thing is to get airframes to play with. Another option is to paint your own if you get spare card decks from the older games (AIM for WWII and Shapeways for WWI) Was talking to the manager of Toy Soldier tonight and he was saying Dec 13 is the next WoG night. We tend to have spare planes so no real need to bring a bunch if you do not have em. Time tends to be from 6 to 9 or so.

Thanks Peter! I noticed the named pilots during your game and wondered a bit. Then looking at planes to buy and realizing there were 3 of each I wondered some more.

    Welcome Harry,

from a fellow Michigander! You wouldn't, by any chance happen to live anywhere near Lansing, would you? We have a fairly active gamer group here, but are always on the lookout for new recruits.

Not sure what to recommend to you because I don't know what you like. Why don't you come out to SPARTACON in Lansing on 12 January 2019 and fly some different stuff and then make a decision?

PM me if you are interested in one of our regular games or need directions to the Con.

    Question

    Thanks Chris!

I do not live near Lansing. SE MI south of the D.

I judt looked at the calender and Jan 12th seems open, so SpartaCon here I come!

Since i posted this, I've picked up the DVa v SPAD duel pack and the no mans land mat. And played. My end goal is to have pretty much all the French, British and German planes. I have very little interest in the other theatres, nut would like to have enough airframe for 4-8 players and enough variants to be able to fly a variety of scenarios like patrol, escort, ground attack, bomber raids, etc.

Ill keep in touch and look Forward to meeting you in January.

Looking like next month is going to be Sails instead. we did have 7 players tonight for an idea of turnout though. Not to say you can not wander up anyway or contact me and we can set up a game there.
