Thread: Next WW1 Giants

  1. #1

    Default Next WW1 Giants

IF Ares should ever be persuaded to produce another special pack or Giants set what sort of multi engined machines would you like to see them consider for it..?
The obvious choices are the Friedrichshafen G.III and a Felixstowe from the Nexus FotG set but what else could be thrown in the mix ?
When we get some contenders I'll set up a poll to see what the most popular choices might be.

    FG3 I would have

I would think those two Nexus ones for sure.
I am not up on my WW.I Bombers, but I would think some French ones are due.

I am surprised that the other aircraft that were only ever made as cards haven't made it to production by now:
    Caproni Ca.42
    Curtis H.16
    Pomilio PC
    SAML S.2

    Gotha G.I Floatplane

I really lust after a Felixstowe!

  6. #6

The Caproni 4 and the Friedrichshafen G.III are the obvious pair. I'd lobby for a Felixstowe/H-16, if they were presented in a couple of those awesome dazzle patterns.

  7. #7

    Default

    The A.E.G. G.IV.

If we ever get the flying boats then we will also need some German floatplanes for them to fight.

What? No one has said the Sikorsky Ilya Muromets yet? Give those Staakens a run for their money...

You are so right!!! How could we have forgotten that monster. That should be number 1 on any list.

I know little about the French stuff (& not much more about anything else !) let alone their multi engine inventory but how about the Caudron G.4 & G.6 ?

    The G.4
Two man, twin engine recon/bomber that flew into the heart of Germany. Later, when Germany developed a fighter force, the aircraft had to be used for night bombings.

one for the card makers - don't lean back too far !

They even did one with floats !
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caudron_G.4

    The G.6

A reconnaissance aircraft that married the wings and engine layout of the unorthodox Caudron G.4 to an all-new fuselage of conventional design. Over 500 of these aircraft were used by the French military for reconnaissance and artillery-spotting duties in 1917 and 1918.

Or how about the Caudron R.4 & R.11

    The R.4
A three seat twin engined machine that performed well in combat conditions, shooting-down a considerable number of enemy aircraft. Intended originally as a bomber, it served mainly as a three-seat reconnaissance aircraft,

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caudron_R.4

    The R.11
A five-seat twin-engine bomber, reconnaissance and escort biplane

I agree! A caudron would be a great addition. I have also thought the Rumpler G.III would be a good one for the central powers. And I know there are plenty of shapeways models but what about the Short bomber for the Allies?

    Rumpler G.III - nice choice
Three man twin pusher engine bomber

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumpler_G.I

The Short bomber whilst not a multi engine beast may still be worthy as a special - a two-seat long-range reconnaissance, bombing and torpedo-carrying aircraft. It may make the list as a big slow vulnerable target !

Not all Giants, so maybe add some Vosins and Farmans? 40 French escadrilles flew Farman HF40s. Vosin III was the most common allied bomber in the early war, Vosin VIII was the main French night bomber 1916-1917. Yes, ARES doesn't have night rules.... but I do!

As much as I'd love to have different giants to go with the ones I already have. I don't get these to the table often enough to justify getting more

I was looking at multi engine and/or larger wingspan models as being specials (like Gotha/Caproni Ca3), or, giants (like the HP O/400) rather than single engine types with the obvious exception. Maybe larger single motor specials could be subject of another Poll.

    Rumpler G.III - 19.3m
    AEG IVk - 18.4m
    Friedrichshafen G.III - 23.7m
    Gotha G.I (float) - 20.3m
    Felixstowe F2 - 29.15m
    Curtis H.16 - 28.26m
    Short Bomber - 25.61m
    Caudron G.4 - 17.2m
    Caudron G.6 - 17.2m
    Caudron R.4 - 21.1m
    Caudron R.11 - 17.92m
    Caproni Ca4 - 29.9m
    Sikorsky Ilya Muromets - 29.8m

Oops, I missed the multi engine bit. I should have read the whole thread from the start but no, I jumped right in!

Lots of great planes on this list I hope we get to see.

I blame it on getting too excited to get back to the Aerodrome after Fall In. A bit of fatigue, 5 games run and the 11 hour drive each way. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

I would like to see the four still missing from the Giants box set.
