    Default "The Blitz" in Zirndorf

    Part 1

Last Friday, Lindinho (Chris) & me arranged a BoB game. It was the three parted „Blitz“ scenario from the new Deluxe Starter Set scenario book.

Playground for part 1 was a brand new gaming mat, that Chris Bought a few days ago at the „Spiel“ in Essen.

We spiced the scenario with altitude rules (all planes on level 5), limited cannon ammo for the Bf.109s and the typical bomber crew housrule, that gunners do not get the aim bonus. The heavy load rule was in play.
Beside this we used the optional crew damage and ignore the uncommon tail gun oft he He.111.

Here you can see the starting position of the Luftwaffe. 2x Messerschmit Bf.109-E and 2x Heinkel He.111.
Mission goal of part 1 was to bring the bombers in one piece over the opposite RAF side. They had to cross two gaming mats.

My Luftwaffe units faced Lindinho’s beloved Hawker Hurricanes of the 303 Squadron. Those were allowed to attack from the left side of the gaming area only only one ruler away from the nearest German plane.

Chris surprised me with a low attack. All Hurricanes dived under my Messerschmitts and started to hunt the Heinkels.

This smoking Bf.109 was definitely Galland with his cigar.

Unfortunately one Hurricane pilot (Zumbach) was wounded in the very first encounter. Another one catched fire during the bomber hunt.

Crew management of the bombers was fun. One gunner had to change between the left and rear gun. Another one was positioned in the fuselage, manning a front & a rear gun wich are only in play if you use altitude rules. (shoots only to the level below)

I thightened the formation oft he Heinkels to concentrate the rear gun fire on the chasing Hurricanes.
Unfortunately one of my He.111s catched fire, but it caused only light damage.

Finally I left the battlefield with the bombers. Two Hurricanes destroyed, all German planes alive.

Here you can see the damage points of the He.111s.

One He. 111 had 16 damage points. The second one with the fire damage had 22 damage points and a single engine damage, that did not affect the plane. (the one with the white markings and the fire damage)

The Bf. 109 had 3 out of 4 cannon shots leftover. - Yes my escort could have been better. Shame on me.

The „Yello Five“ had 10 damage points (8 from a collision and 2 from shooting), The „White 13“ was undamaged.

    Part 2

Now the Germans started over London.

I really hope Ares Games releases somewhere in the future those mats in mouse pad quality and not only on paper.

We decide to give each Bf.109 escort fighter a limited fuel of 40 points.

My pland was to keep track of the fuel with the old Ares Games WGS App, but my oldest daughter demanded her I-Pad back, so pen & paper had to do the job.

Zumbach’s Hurricane was in play again, supported by 2 Supermarine Spitfires.

I used some special Doncaster rulers for this picture. The Hurricane catched a close range cannon shot, but survived.

Fortunaltely I had unlimited fuel for the mission over London.

No Stukas in play, but the T-Shirt is cool.

The dreadful RAF boys shot down one Heinkel before it reached the target.

But the bomber of the Staffelführer hit the target. (…only partial )

One "SCHPITTFEUER" down, the remaining two Engländers went for the lonesome bomber.
I brought in the Messermitts. (hard to see on the city map)

Finally the last bomber was shot down. In the same shooting phase, the rear gunner shot down the last Spitfire & Zumbach killed the „White 5“ Bf.109 wich came unlucky in short range to the Hurricane without the possibility to shoot back.

With only one damage point left, the Hurricane left the battlefield, followed by a Bf.109 that had used 37 out of 40 points of fuel.

It was a very thight race between the faster Messerschmitt & the Hurricane. I managed to get in shooting range once, but lucky Chris drew a A-deck zero and escaped. Unfortunately all cannon rounds were gone at this time.

The final outcome was 58:54 for the RAF side. A tight British victory.

    Germany
    Destroyed Huricanes 2 x 12 points
    Destroyed Spitfires 2 x 12 points
    Partial damaged target 6 points

    Britain
    Destroyed Heinkels 2 x 18 points
    Destroyed Bf.109 1 x 12 points
    Undamaged target 1 x 10 points

Luck & bad luck were on both sides. A balanced game and we had a lot of fun.

We did not play part 3 because no German bomber survived part 2. The Blitz is a great mini campaign, but time-consuming with only two players.

I use exactly these rules for my WW2 Battle of Britain missions.

Great report Sven! Especially the last few turns were nailbiting. Unbelievable that Jan Zumbach, my squadron leader survived this.

    Regards,
