It seems, Mike, that you have decals for a 'factory-fresh' Fokker...

Unfortunately in 1/32 scale. Very nice decals, though. Would save a lot of painting and messing up a model.

PS: Just took a browse through the Aviattic site. Wow! The modeling and products on this site are worth a look, and I will likely be back for reference material for textured linens and lozenge patterns. Too bad there isn't much for 144th scale.

Aviattic does have a nice site, Mike - I discovered it about a month ago while looking for other stuff on ebay... You're right about the 1/144th scale stuff - it's too bad they do not do more...

    All the best,

My November WiP. This is a WoG repaint of an extra MvR Dr.I with the Green mid wing version. I have been wanting a Werner Voss Tripe for a while now and finally got the decals I needed to do it.
I first base coated it in an Ivory White. Then painted it all in "Sea Foam" from Delta Ceramcoat. Then did a wet/dry brush technique using model master Olive Drab acrylics. Decals are from Aviation Wing.com ordered thru the Aerodrome store.

I still have some touch up to do such as the leather padding around the cockpit, and the coloring of the Wheel hub, and re attaching the propeller.

Pfalz Dr1. Not many of these produced, although according to one source its' climb rate and top speed were better than the Fokker Dr1. However, the engine proved to be unreliable. Another Shapeways model, this one from Kampfflieger. Three coats PVA/water (3:1) mix and decals from the Aerodrome Store (I still have to try and add the serial number at font size 3 - Mmmmmmm aah well, I shall give it a try - but the original is on a sheet yet to be filled and that may yet take a long time. Very simple paint job but a nice little aircraft from 1918.

Aviatik C.1 representing 381/15 - one of a batch of 18 ordered in June 1915. Based on a photo from "Brieftauben Abteilung-Ostende, 1915" and a colour portrait on the back of a Windsock file. Shapeways model by Colinwe/wow. Decals are from a variety of sources including the Aerodrome Store and Doms decals. I used masking tape to produce the two black bands on the fuselage. Pilot and crew unknown. I have added one machine gun although it could be mounted with two, one on each of the side rails either side of the front, observer's, cockpit.

Nice work, Mike. That Aviatik C.I will come in handy for you in January.
I like the look of their 'target' as well.

Mike, you are being very productive - well done. The masking tape seems to have worked well because the body still looks quite rough in the close ups, I would have thought you might get paint bleeding under the tape because if that.
On the Aviatik the Wings look smoother than the body, do you think that is the case when you look at it in real life?
Someone said earlier that the PVA filler sat in the hollows on horizontal surfaces but ran off on vertical ones, does that appear to have happened here.
Sorry to be picking your brains so much lately but I'm going to start on my Shapeways planes soon so I hope to learn from what you are doing.
At the end of the day these both look really good, very impressed.

    Cheers guys.
I would have thought you might get paint bleeding under the tape
I did John, which was a pain because I then had to try and match the side and underside fuselage colour again (a mix of three, although I doubt that shows). Touching up wasn't so bad though, as the masking tape leaves a tiny ridge, which helps to guide the bristles of the brush.
Someone said earlier that the PVA filler sat in the hollows on horizontal surfaces but ran off on vertical ones, does that appear to have happened here?
You may be right John. Myself, I'm not sure how the PVA/water wash behaves to be honest. At the end of the day, for me the models are playing pieces, which are mainly viewed at a distance. The imperfections don't show up so badly then. Its only the close up photos that are affected and I'm not sure if its the wash on the vertical surfaces that makes a difference, or just the lighting conditions. I've seen work done by other members, which is way, way better than mine and stands up well to very close inspection. But I'm not sure how they achieve that. I know some folk use some kind of polish, but I have yet to explore that idea. Anyway, a bit of trial and error now and then and I hope to improve, slowly Next up an Albatros CI - lets see if four coats of wash makes a difference, or if leaving the model on its side, somehow, helps with every other coat.

'Brieftauben Abteilung Oostende' translates to 'Carrier Pigeon Section Ostend' a poor cover name for a 'secret' bombing unit.

Yes, the Red Baron was a member of the unit, and learned aerial combat there as an observer.

Lovely job on the "Doll", Bob...homemade decals, I assume? Nice to see a somewhat 'easy' conversion of that rather particular color scheme. How many do you plan to ultimately do from the same BG/BS?

Beautiful job on the card, Mike, as always The BAO was an interesting early-war unit - there was some interesting coverage of it in another book I have that covers von Richthofen and JGI.

Keep up the inspirational work, lads!

Decals created from an online image, cleaned up in Paint Shop, resized, and printed on my Inkjet on Testor's Clear Decal Paper.
Being from the same Squadron, the conversion was relatively straightforward. This was prepped in advance of a get together with my local WOG group, who will all be bringing bombers and late war escort fighters/interceptors for a deep penetration mission. With only two "factory" paint schemes out there, I wanted to make mine fit in but also be easily identifiable. Would it be cool to have more ....yes....but not likely at $30 each ;-)

Yes, and at the Mick Owen Memorial game @ Entoyment!

It needed ailerons painted on, and the heart symbol reworked, new engine and prop colours, and the tail stripes straightening (and Serial Number added).
Changed the colour of the struts, too.

That, and a new coat of 'Army Painter' Soft Tone overall.
