Question New Guy With Old Questions

First let me say I have done some searching, but have not found all the answers I was looking for here so I thought I would ask a few questions and hopefully get some more knowledgeable folks to answer for me.

    1. Is Ares still producing WOG WWII content? If they are not making new content are they actively re-printing old content/models?
(I'm aware time between reprints of some of these more niche games can be measured in years rather than months but I'm just curious to know if it's happening at all)

    2. I'm an American and British WWII plane enthusiast I have found a few of the models but not many. Are there any places that I'm not thinking of that would be worth searching for these models?
(I'm good with New or Used)

    3. Are there some stand-out units/expansions/models, regardless of nation, that I should get?
(ie Everyone who plays WoG WWII should have _______).

    4. Are the bombers worth getting for game play? Are bombing scenarios common amongst casual players or are they more reserved for those who play campaigns.
(I'm trying to spend my money on the units I'm most likely to use if I happen to find anyone in Oklahoma who plays the game)

    5. Not that I have seen much competitive play advertised but are there planes that are more competitive than others? If so which ones are they and is there a 'tier' list that ranks the planes in WoG?

I think that's it for now. Thank you in advance for indulging a rookie with several questions!

I'm not a particularly seasoned veteran of the game, but coming from X-Wing I've found that Wings of Glory and its community are much less focused on the competitive side and more on specific mission and scenarios (which is admittedly a breath of fresh air)

That's not a bad thing at all. I also play/played X-wing and don't mind a more casual game at all. I just thought I'd ask just in case there were some 'can't miss, really good, planes to consider'!

    Welcome to the Aerodrome Tyler,

Here's my shot and some answers from my POV.

    1. Is Ares still producing WOG WWII content? If they are not making new content are they actively re-printing old content/models?
(I'm aware time between reprints of some of these more niche games can be measured in years rather than months but I'm just curious to know if it's happening at all)

Yes, ARES is still producing WW2 planes, it's just been a while since a solid release. Last out were German bombers Do17 and Ju88 to fill in the Battle of Britain starter set. Next out should be a Blenheim and an Italian SM79. After that they have been teasing us with planes for the Pacific, Corsair, Airacobra, Oscar and Lightning. Of course Covid threw a wrench into the works so they will get to us on their own sweet time.
With or before the new Pacific planes we will likely see Zeros and Wildcats re-released.

    2. I'm an American and British WWII plane enthusiast I have found a few of the models but not many. Are there any places that I'm not thinking of that would be worth searching for these models?
(I'm good with New or Used)

Sadly the Aerodrome store just sold all their stock and is closing. It was "THE" place to get our planes. Miniature Market and CoolStuffInc. are other sources to find planes. Ebay can sometimes cough up a plane for a decent price. Keep an eye here in the Forums Marketplace. People will sell here occasionally.

    3. Are there some stand-out units/expansions/models, regardless of nation, that I should get?
(ie Everyone who plays WoG WWII should have _______).

Most would say to get whatever you can when you see it as when they are gone it will be many many years for a reprint.

    4. Are the bombers worth getting for game play? Are bombing scenarios common amongst casual players or are they more reserved for those who play campaigns.
(I'm trying to spend my money on the units I'm most likely to use if I happen to find anyone in Oklahoma who plays the game)

Bombers are a must to give you scenario options.

    5. Not that I have seen much competitive play advertised but are there planes that are more competitive than others? If so which ones are they and is there a 'tier' list that ranks the planes in WoG?

There is a point system if that's what you are into. Most here are more interested in mission based scenarios not thinking about poinbts.

Planes can be difficult to find. If you like to paint your own, Armaments in Miniature is the place to go for WW2. You will have to come up with bases and movement cards on your own. I can email you scans of the deck(s) you need to print yourself.
There is an Unofficial Committee that has put together a fine list of planes with stats not produced by ARES. You can find that list in the files and 'HERE'.

    Welcome Tyler!

Teaticket covered your questions well. As a relative noobie myself (less than 2 years), I was able to collect all the WWI airplanes produced over the course of about a year. My sources were primarily eBay, Amazon and a few hobby stores in the US and one in Italy. I've even commissioned Teaticket to paint a few for me! I've just started purchasing 3D printed aircraft from Shapeways and painting them myself. I'm a WWI guy, but during my searches, I've seen just as many WWII aircraft for sale.

As for what to buy... I just looked at history to see what opposing planes were in the air fighting at any given time and match them up (e.g. Camel vs. Albatros).

Mostly, I just advise jumping in and getting started! I spent too much time on the sidelines watching and analyzing what to buy and what everyone was doing. Get a few planes, and get started - the rest comes naturally.

Hello Tyler and welcome to our crazy community. In my humble pinion if you are lucky enough to find a duel pack on the web then that would be a good start as it gives you two planes and all you need to start playing. You can download more complete for free from the Ares website. If you cannot score a duel pack then you will have to buy the Rules and Accessories pack for the rulers, counters, cards and cockpits etc. Big Bombers .... well I am thinking that maybe a two seater or two would be more useful.

We have a member (Evan) who runs his own business https://rivalsky.com.au He has just about everything in stock and I think International postage is $20 from him at the moment. He is a good guy and will fix you up with what you want. Please remember too that 1 Aussie dollar is about 74 cents US, so prices for you are cheaper than shown.

Thank you for the thorough answer Teaticket!

If you would permit me a few follow-ups....... I have the Battle of Britain starter on the way. You mentioned some releases to complete that set. Is that more in the realm of historical accuracy or are there campaigns related to that that require the newly released planes?

On a similar note, about how many of each plane should I look to acquire. I know you can play the game with just two, but I'd like to know how many people normally play with so I know how many of the planes I prefer I should try to acquire. This goes for bombers as well.

    .
ARES has not yet released any campaign rules so the planes are to fill in the most important historical participants. If you want a campaign you will have to make one yourself or you can use the Fire in the Sky campaign in the Forums WW2 section.

Besides the BoB set there are also available Hurricanes and Stukas. The latest release were the German bombers - Ju88s, Do17 and a Do17 night fighter. In the way back past there was a pair of He111s. We're all surprised they have not been re-released with the BoB set.

For games with friends I like to have 2 planes per player. So if you think you'll have 3 friends playing I'd go for 4 of each fighter. A pair of bombers should be a good start. They can be flown as drones or player flown.

Hi Tyler and welcome to the Mess
Others gave you perfect information, I just add a note about BoB. It's a perfect start inthis moment simply because all relevant minis are relatively available. BoB starter + few Hurries + few Stukas + medium bombers and you'll fully equipped (maybe try your luck on eBay with He.111). The same is for PTO in future (yes, I still believe this set will come).
OK, here's the note: if you'll see P-51, Fw.190 or any other late aircraft, buy them. Nobody knows how many years we'll need to wait for their reprint. On the other side, it's not easy to fombine them with an early war planes (BoB) simply because they're literary from another era and attacking single / pair / group of B-17 with a pair ofnold Bf.109E is just...madness.

PS: Played first 5 mission of Fire in the Sky campaign during COVID isolation and I can recommend it with all my hearth

Hi Tyler, welcome to the 'Drome!

Your questions have been answered pretty thoroughly, but I'll add a short addendum of my own...

    1) Yes (in theory), No (in practice); perhaps when Covid subsides, new production might restart.

    2) Some players have spares available for sale, but are not Businesses - you could try listing your specific "Wants" in the Buy/Sell section of the Marketplace; someone might be able to help you out with a plane or two.

    3) As far as "Stand-Out Units" are concerned, insert your own personal preferences here! The combat stats of the planes are all compatible, but a-historical mismatches can look weird (Dauntless Dive bomber vs Bf 109???). I suggest you pick a Theatre and Time-frame, and fill that out with "Stand-out Units".
Beyond that, as others have said, grab all the planes you can find (within reasonable pricing ranges). Spares of your own can serve as future bargaining chips in Swaps!

    4) I feel that bombers are essential. Dogfights are great fun, but if they are all that is on offer the novelty soon wears off.

    5) Some planes are better than others (some are a LOT better!). There is a 'points' system, but it was added semi-unofficially later on, and it is very arbitrary in nature (you don't always get the same "bang for your buck"). It is a decent rough guide for combat comparisons.

Extra questions - the Battle of Britain set IS Complete; you don't NEED anything else to play two vs two dogfights. However, I would certainly suggest adding the Hurricane and Stuka models, plus some bombers (after all, Stop The Bombers is what the Battle of Britain was all about!).

As for numbers of planes, there are two options; Historical and player-managed.
Historically, RAF fighters flew in "Vics" of three, while German Fighters flew in "Swarms" of four. A lone Bomber/Stuka, escorted or not, is a recipe for a quick game (a lucky hit or two, and the scenario is over...). Get two or more.
For player-managed, obviously don't try to overload a small number of players with lots of aircraft each (and DON'T let the card decks get mixed up! Sorting out is a Nightmare!!!)

The Bombers can be flown in formation - use a single planning deck, and move ALL the Bombers identically.

Personally, I would suggest 3 Spitfires, 3 Hurricanes, 4 Bf 109s, 3 identical Bombers and perhaps a couple of Stukas - that would give a BIG game, or a variety of options for smaller ones.

If you are aiming at big games, a second Battle of Britain Starter set is a cheaper way of getting extra Spitfires and Bf 109s along with the extra cards and counters you will probably need for a large furball. You will need to "rebadge" the duplicated planes!.

As others have said, there was also the Heinkel He-111 previously (but getting 2 or three might be very difficult and prohibitably expensive! ) and there was also the Bf 110, which could serve as a cheaper fighter/bomber option, as well as a different fighter for the Germans.

Good luck with your purchasing progress - that's fun in itself!

    Thank you for the advice!

I have been reading about Fire in the Sky and I very much want to try it. I'm still trying to figure out how it works single player though. There is a lot of info there and it's a bit confusing.

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of detail I was hoping to find (even if it is going to be costly!)

For era's myself I would probably prefer late-war Pacific, but since it sounds like that does not actually exist the Battle of Brittan along with the mid war bombing raids over Europe would probably the next most interesting theaters/eras that I would explore. Those, at least appear to be available now.

I have not found any Stuka's, do you know of a store that has some by chance?

Welcome to the aerodrome, Tyler! There are many knowledgeable people here who will help you out. Your wallet will hate them

Sinclair Games has a stuka. Use code SCG05 for an additional 5% off at checkout.

Not in the US; the recent massive postage cost increases make transatlantic purchases much more expensive.
Since the clearout at the Aerodrome Accessories Store (in which I was happy to participate!) I no longer use any US suppliers (I have loyalty points at Miniature Market, but since they now decline to post to the UK, these are useless).

I can source Stukas in the UK, but posting them to you might prove costly.

I got some WW2 planes from Keith's clearance sale and was thinking about Stukas. 3 would be nice, 2 would be acceptable. PM me with price. Ta everso Iain

Shot you a PM Tim, I have not done any UK shipping lately but I did ship some Star Trek Attack Wing back and fourth last year and while it was not 'cheap' It was reasonable. Might be worth checking just in case!
