Welcome to the Aerodrome Tyler,
Here's my shot and some answers from my POV.
1. Is Ares still producing
WOG WWII content? If they are not making new content are they actively re-printing old content/models?
(I'm aware time between reprints of some of these more niche games can be measured in years rather than months but I'm just curious to know if it's happening at all)
Yes, ARES is still producing WW2 planes, it's just been a while since a solid release. Last out were German bombers Do17 and Ju88 to fill in the Battle of Britain starter set. Next out should be a Blenheim and an Italian SM79. After that they have been teasing us with planes for the Pacific, Corsair, Airacobra, Oscar and Lightning. Of course Covid threw a wrench into the works so they will get to us on their own sweet time.
With or before the new Pacific planes we will likely see Zeros and Wildcats re-released.
2. I'm an American and British WWII plane enthusiast I have found a few of the models but not many. Are there any places that I'm not thinking of that would be worth searching for these models?
(I'm good with New or Used)
Sadly the Aerodrome store just sold all their stock and is closing. It was "THE" place to get our planes. Miniature Market and CoolStuffInc. are other sources to find planes. Ebay can sometimes cough up a plane for a decent price. Keep an eye here in the Forums Marketplace. People will sell here occasionally.
3. Are there some stand-out units/expansions/models, regardless of nation, that I should get?
(ie Everyone who plays
WoG WWII should have _______).
Most would say to get whatever you can when you see it as when they are gone it will be many many years for a reprint.
4. Are the bombers worth getting for game play? Are bombing scenarios common amongst casual players or are they more reserved for those who play campaigns.
(I'm trying to spend my money on the units I'm most likely to use if I happen to find anyone in Oklahoma who plays the game)
Bombers are a must to give you scenario options.
5. Not that I have seen much competitive play advertised but are there planes that are more competitive than others? If so which ones are they and is there a 'tier' list that ranks the planes in
WoG?
There is a point system if that's what you are into. Most here are more interested in mission based scenarios not thinking about poinbts.
Planes can be difficult to find. If you like to paint your own, Armaments in Miniature is the place to go for WW2. You will have to come up with bases and movement cards on your own. I can email you scans of the deck(s) you need to print yourself.
There is an Unofficial Committee that has put together a fine list of planes with stats not produced by ARES. You can find that list in the files and
'HERE'.
