Thread: Luftwaffe Feldgendarmerie WW2 Gorget

    Default Luftwaffe Feldgendarmerie WW2 Gorget

I have just acquired a WW2 Luftwaffe Feldgendarmerie Gorget from a well known dealer who used to run a shop in Upper Street Islington London, I have checked out it's provenance which on the face of it appears genuine, The only photo I could find on the Internet was of a Luftwaffe Feldgendarmerie has an Army (Straight winged Eagle) Gorget, Which is totally wrong!!

Does anyone have any real pictures of an Luftwaffe (flying winged Eagle) Gorget?

Just a speculation from a non-collector, but depending on when a photograph was taken, and considering production and supply issues in Germany at the time, Luftwaffe MPs might have worn whatever was available.

I have one somewhere in my attic; my grandfather "collected" it on Normandy Beach.

I'm out of town, so it will be a few days for me to look for it.

All of my resources are still packed away from the move, but a quick online search just suggested that the Hermann Goering Division's MPs were the only ones to wear the Luftwaffe gorget - the rest of the LW used the Army version. I would imagine the early Fallschirmjaeger divisions might also have had LW pattern gorgets for their MPs. Given the rapid expansion of LW ground units during '42 and after, it's no surprise that they would be issued with whatever gorget was available.

Happy hunting as you look for documentary evidence

    all the best,

Roll down the site and see the zoomed picture.
There is the evidence needed, IMHO.

Quite true; FJ troops frequently were issued standard pattern helmets and weapons.

Aside from their propaganda and forced cultural issues, the design the Nazis appropriated has a long history as a decorative element, (not to mention the the actual historical religious use).
It can be found in pre-Nazi border designs in architecture and embroidery, to name just a couple uses.
