Default The mysteries of the BMW IIIa engine explained

A very interesting YouTube film on the workings of the BMW IIIa engine. It equipped the late Fokker DVII also known as the DVIIF.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78nAd49BeVs

The above is part one, there is also a part two in the side bar.

Greg appears to know his subject and explains the mysteries of how this revolutionary engine worked. He suggests, among other things, that the engine's horsepower may actually be under-rated as German figures were on the low side. Allied tests achieved up to 230 h.p. but this may have been with better quality petrol than the Germans possessed.

Those videos are a great 'find', Barry! Thank you for sharing them. Now someone needs to think about how to incorporate this information into the game.

    Thank you all.

Some games already do. I well remember - even back in the late 1970s - that when performance details of the late DVII were applied to the Harold Wood 1/72 games there was a certain amount of player 'dismay' on the Allied side. However... the DVII was the only aircraft specifically named in the Versailles Treaty so you have to realise that this type made considerable impact on its enemies.

Thanks Barry. The technical material in video one was really interesting and the tactical video two was a lot of fun as well. I'll leave it to the experts to try and work out how to get that lot into the game and then, if they succeed, aim to keep any entente aircraft at low altitude Thanks for sharing.

I'm not doing much Wings nowadays but I'm glad I do the occasional lurking on this site and one of the main reasons I visit is to read your posts! : )
Thanks for sharing this great link.
The well-thought and well-argued presentation has helped to clarify a number of issues regarding over-compression.
For example I thought the Mercedes DIIIau had an altitude throttle when only the BMW IIIa had the significant benefit of the secondary throttle.
