Thread: Austrian Italian Front

    Default Austrian Italian Front

The Wright Flight had their second Saturday of the month game today. I brought 6 Hanriot HD.1s marked up in 76 Squadriglia. Ray Garbee brought some wonderfully painted Phoenix. Epic Loot had some fantastic mountain terrain mats that really added to the game.

I love how the Phoenix blends into the terrain in this picture.

Here's to them what are like us. Damn few and they're all dead.

Those mats really set the scene don't they - the change in mat colour in this shot (dirty snow - won't go into that) makes them look like they're flying in front of the mountain rather than over it.

Very nice. I'm assuming the Phonix two seaters are Shapeways? I've been wanting to get some of these.

What a splendid set of photos Jim. I am also very interested to find out where the Phonbix came from.

    Peter/Rob,

The Phonix C.1 models are indeed from Shapeways from the "WOW By colinwe" shop. I ordered them back in May of 2015. One of the models arrived with a wheel broken off. The Shapeways folks printed and shipped a replacement. I took a stab at crafting a replacement wheel for the damaged model and was happy enough with the results to use it on the table. The models are the basic WSF material. Paints were a mix of craft paint and some of the Vallejo colors (dark green springs to mind).

It was a fun time pitting the A-H flik against the 76 Sqdn pilots. Lots of explosions in that game!

Thanks Ray. Your planes look great.

I am thinking you really need to rotate one of your shots and zoom out to show the mat in all it's glory. I probably should have done the same in my last AAR and will do in my next. It is really great to see new mats being used in the game. I loves the Ares/Nexus ones and they are really good until you put them together and then you get colour mismatches and misaligned rivers where one or other of them have stretched. Still like the modular concept a lot but prefer using one at 6x4 size. Getting off topic here but a great AAR thanks for posting.

Great looking paint jobs Ray, hope the boom cards weren't all yours ...

Nice stuff here, Jim and Ray Sorry I was unable to make the game - pesky relatives staying later than I thought they would...

We've used those mats before for Italian Front flying and always comment on how great they work...and it's nice to see all those Hanriots and Phoenixes on the table

    All the best,
    Matt

Thanks for posting the AAR and photos.

How did the Phoenix fighters do against Hanriots? I just ordered a Phoenix D.I for myself and was thinking about putting together some Hanriot vs. Phoenix dogfights myself.

The Phoenix held their own. The observer/gunner always makes a plane tough to battle. The Hanriot is a great little plane that has a very responsive maneuver deck. It all made for some great flying.

Well mine would do better if they'd STOP EXPLODING!

Other than that - the D.I does okay. It can't match the wicked side slip in the HD.1's deck, but it's a solid, serviceable airplane.
