That was interesting, Bob. B-17's are not usually thought of as transports or ground strafers.
The PB4Y-1 (naval B-24s) however, did a lot of strafing and low level bombing, as did it's successor, the PB4Y-2.
Not surprising they found such a use for the older B-17s.

Check out the book 'We Flew Alone' in the book reviews. All about the Navy B-24s and their missions over the Pacific. Mostly solo missions...(I hope to make a campaign for this)
Follow up book 'Above an Angry Sea' I don't yet have.
Great story Bob!
I did know we had B-17's operating out of New Guinea but had not heard about the Transport role they undertook.
Nice B17 story.
Thx.

Interesting article.
I knew a dozen B17s flew into Hawaii on December 7th during the Japanese attack. They were stopping off enroute to areas around the Philippines to be used as reconnaissance aircraft and other missions. I guess the other missions were straying .
Now I have a new PTO mission for my B17s.
Some had mottled camo applied. I read that the paints were locally sourced automotive paints. So found a few color images and I just followed what was visible. This is an Academy Sky Giant 1/200 Model.
Very nice Tony. I have a couple books from Squadron that show different camo schemes used by the US before and when the war started.
Great job Tony. That is beautiful camo work.
What a gorgeous variation on the standard B-17's appearance, Tony! This looks just striking on the tabletop
All the best,
Matt

I'm gonna have to redo the card I did for the B-17F/Gs for this...

Good work on the camouflage, Tony, and on the card, Mike!

Had to go and hand-draw the nose and waist gun positions in Adobe Illustrator for an 'E' version, but now I have one.
When searching, I did find this image on-line, identified as a B-17E:
The side view is an 'E', but the top-down view is definitely NOT an 'E'. I believe it to be a 'C' version, but unusable for a card. Which is why I had to hand-edit a 'G' version to get the 'E' above.

Check this page . . . Scroll through the image, there are top and bottom images : )
Dave,
Top-down images are not what I'm looking for, to make cards with custom paint jobs. What I need are the outline drawings of planes, in their various versions, so I can put the paint job under the lines.
Cleaning all the extraneous parts of images away is actually more work than doing line drawings line-by-line. When I do that in Illustrator, I get crisp, clean panel lines at very high resolution. But, I only do that when I am absolutely desperate, as in the case above. I just couldn't find any drawings of an 'E' version, at any resolution.
Like the drawing I posted above, identified as an 'E', but clearly the top-down view is not. I scoured the interweb for a few days, checked all my go-to sites, and none of them had a drawing of an 'E' version B-17, except that mistaken one. Darn!
What I ended up using was the below illustration, on a layer below my Illustrator 'G' version, to piece together the 'E' for the card:
