Thread: SBD Dauntless Cargo run Scenario

  1. #1

Default SBD Dauntless Cargo run Scenario

The bases for this scenario stems from this discussion that occurred last year in the officers club:

    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...st-a-Colleague

    Scenario rough draft:

An Imperial Japanese Navy Submarine (this is fictional obviously) has been tracking a US Liberty Ship presumed to be running re-supply to the various carrier groups West of of the Philippine Islands.

Instead of a sink and run strategy, the IJN sub is running inelegance on the ship's progress in hopes of netting a bigger prize; a US carrier.

The IJN has coordinated a land based attack using Val dive bombers converted to carry the German Lt F5b Torpedo.

The idea is to provide an alternative to the Emperor regarding the Kamikaze concept , and to provide proof that submarine intelligence based aircraft hit and run attacks would be more effective than squandering personnel and equipment.

The scenario will be set in August of 1944 about 100 miles west of the Philippine island of Samar. A US liberty ship will be transferring six partially assembled SBD Dauntless aircraft to CVE 73 Gambier Bay under a 2 aircraft US Navy CAP patrol.

The US CAP patrol will be surprised by 6 IJN torpedo bearing Vals closing on the CVE.

An Escort Destroyer in the distance will support a Fletcher Class destroyer running cover for the carrier and liberty ship.

The date for the game will be January or February (2019).

Objective: To get those Dauntless on the CVEs so they can start running long range recon on IJN shipping and land action.

Thank you to anyone that has had or does have any additional ideas/considerations to add,
    Chris

    Preliminary Chatter:

We just received chatter over frequency that CAP patrol 2 led by Lt. Hank Renault and Ltjg. Pete Jenkins has been engaged by 2 IJN Zeros.

The Zeros were splashed; but Renault got chewed up pretty badly and is evidently struggling his way back to group.

With CVE 73 Gambier Bay tethered to a Cargo Ship (transferring stores), the group is in a fragile state. It looks like the Japanese are making their play.

The after action report will become available once Lt. Renault gets back onboard.

No other chatter noted at this time,
    Group

Thank you guys for checking in on the scenario.

I just reviewed the first part of the battle (the dog fight) from Dec 2018 (I'll post both parts when done), and tomorrow 05/27/2019 I get to fly the last part through.

Will Lt. Hank Renault be able to fly the 40 miles of Pacific ocean back to the carrier group with his ailing aircraft engine? Can he get there on the 150 lbs. of leaking fuel he has left in his tank? Will Lt jg. Pete Jenkins, flying cover overhead; every be able to forgive himself knowing that the reason Hank got so shot up was because Pete couldn't splash that first Zero?

Hank has hours of carrier landings under his belt; but, he never had to land a bad bird.

    I hope he makes it,
