Default Any good reading this weekend, Pilots?;)

The leisure time this year is going to an end for me, so after return from quite a long family voyage to Madagascar and other places of holiday interest I am trying to get used to regular service in the Drome.
Refreshing reading time has started with a blast: One of the Few, by Johnny Kent, the legendary 303. Commander.

Greetings in return my dear friend.
We are just back from the Partizan show, and in for a pretty hectic time over the next few weeks. Our big Re enactment event of the year from Thursday to Monday, and then off to holiday in the South of England before preparing for Doncaster.
I hope you enjoyed your holiday and am only sorry that you can't stay with us this year.
Hope to see you at Prague in the Springtime.
    Rob.

Welcome back. I hope your vacationing was relaxing.
No Aerodrome related books right now; I'm re-reading Drakes Northworld trilogy. I love his style, and would be interested in what he might do with a WW1 pilot's book.

Not air related but a few years ago I took a cruise to Canada and one stop was Halifax. As we rode the double decker bus they explained many things about the city. One was about the ammunition ship explosion during WWI so when I saw this book I had to get it. Very good read as it tells the story using the people's stories about what and how this tragedy happened.

Because of all the help Massachusetts sent to Halifax in relief after the explosion, every year since a very large tree is sent to Boston for the state's Christmas tree.

A sad and very devastating event to the city.

    Thumbs up

No Aero Book at present but just finished a cracking Crime novel set in the Boer War. "No Ordinary Death" features a Army Doctor, an Australian nurse & a raft of "Nasties" covering up a secret weapon experiment.

    Hi Andy
If you are in to Si-Fi then try Slabscape : Reset and it's sequel Slabscape: Dammit
by S. Spencer Baker It is described as a cross between The Culture novel of Iain M Banks and the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I very much enjoyed them both.

    So many good recommendations. Thanks
@Reg: I am not far from SF reading my friend. My contemporary line is...Star Wars new canon books. And the latest blast I read is D.S.Dawson's "Phasma". For those who watched "The Force Awakens" and "The Last Jedi" that book should be a must read, IMHO.
No "Force", no space battles, but a deep, side story behind the main action. And quite brutal. Definitely not for youngsters. Something like an immersive crime story with nicely sketched characters.

I'll look out for them and give them a try.
If you can find anything by Peter F. Hamilton then I heartily recommend him. I find him quite brilliant.

Just finished King Solomon's mines by H Rider Haggard, a great read. I've been promising to read some of the old classics for some time.

One of the Few sounds interesting. I'll have to put that one on my reading list.

I'm currently working on Masters of Air about the 8th Air Force in WWII.

A fascinating reappraisal of many of the myths commonly believed to be fact about the British Army in the First World War.

It is a bit one-sided,strenuously promoting its mission objective, but it left me with a very different view of the subject matter from a historical perspective.

    I'm currently slogging through this:

A heartbreaking analysis of the experience of junior officers in the trenches, particularly in contrast to the lives of the men they lead.

A difficult read, both on its style of prose, and with the constant interruption of quotes and anecdotes and letters from the Front. It is these, though, which lend the book its power to move and affect the reader. I look forward to finishing it, but it is heavy going.

Recent reprint of the original 1978 book by Hugh Verity, one of the pilots who flew the clandestine flights to France to drop off and pick up agents.

Interesting, Steve. This is Johnny Kent in his book who underlined what a great flying machine the Lysander was, especially in rescue missions, due to it's perfect canopy view.

Will they take the winning reader over Germany, Rob? Is it going to be a night ride if you pay extra?

So many books and so little time. All look good. I have to get into the habit of reading at least one a month like I used to.

    My thoughts exactly!
Crossing 52 years of age I came to a conclusion my gaming/reading days are numbered...

I've heard rumor that if you have an unplayed board game you cannot die until you've played it. Another version is if you have any unpainted minis you won't pass until they are all painted. Maybe it also follows with unread books one has? I'll keep one of each unplayed, unpainted and unread just in case.

Just finished a cracking good read on my Kindle: "the Great Game-a Colonial adventure".
Set in India during the Raj with action on the Northwest Frontier & the Hindu Kush with a cameo by Rudyard Kipling right at the end.
