Cool OTTBE Mission 24 - The Cornered Beast Strikes Back - 21st October 1918

    Mutt's Camp
    Mess Hall 1800 Hrs

Capt.Richard Forbes: Gentlemen, we have four new members to our group.
Lt. Reeves and 2Lt. Winklebleck, you are the available experienced pilots for tomorrows patrols. Get to know a little bit about the new guys and decide who you will take with you.
You will have three Snipes and 3 Camels for your use.
Lt. Reeves you take the three Snipes and 2Lt. Winklebleck you take the Camels.
Good Luck tonight, I will see you at the 0500 briefing.

    Mutt's Camp 0500 hrs

Capt. Forbes: Have you decided who will be on your wings today?

Lt. Reeves: Yes Sir, I will be taking 2Lts. McGregor and Mullaney (R), while 2Lt. Winklebleck will take 2Lts. Crowley and Jacobs(R).

Capt. Forbes: Good. We have what is supposed to be a routine patrol. 2Lt. Winklebleck you take your group and fly Northeast to Marche and then turn and head for LaRoche.
Lt. Forbes your group will fly to Bastogne and then head North to LaRoche and join up with the 2Lt. and his group and then return here.
Remember gentlemen nothing is routine here so keep your eyes open and don't get complacent out there.
2Lt. Jacobs and 2Lt. Mullaney follow your leader, listen to their advice, and if you are lucky you will return here.
Any last comments or instructions these two will give to you on the way to your planes.
    Good Luck out there.

    Mutt's Camp 1200 hrs

    2Lt. Winklebleck:
it started out as one of those days as a pilot you wish for. We made our way to Marche and made the turn for LaRoche. So far we had seen nothing but blue skies and a patchwork quilt below us. We closed in on LaRoche and not seeing Lt. Reeves flight we circled the area until I decided to head back home.
As we approached the front we were jumped by a Kette of those new Fokkers. They dropped down on us from our 7 and came in above us.

Lt. Reeves: 2Lt. McGregor(6) misjudged the closing speed of the enemy and collided with the Fokker(0). He will learn and that was a hard lesson. I on the other hand got lucky and just missed two of the Huns.

Wheeling and dealing trying to get back into position to take a shot. Odds are 6:3 or 2-1 in favor of the Entente. BUT, the stubborn Hun are refusing to quit.

Notes: This is a good scenario from start to finish. I will use it as an option during the next Extra Life Fundraiser.

Because the Central Powers pilots were supposed to be fighting and flying like Aces, I allowed them to take the first shot every time instead of throwing a die to see who got to draw first.
As a ROOKIE, 2Lt. Mullaney just happened to be in the right place at the right time to get 2 KILLS, especially when required to shoot last.

I had gun jams, especially Lt. Reeves getting 3 on one shot using his Ace ability, Smoke, Fire, Pilot wounds, but No Engine damage. My "A" deck was getting very thin.

Having said that, I was tired and a little PO'd by outside circumstances to really enjoy playing this. I waited a couple of days before doing the write up and found the write up more enjoyable.

    Thanks for the adventure.

Well Mullaney is certainly one lucky b*gger!
Not often a rookie gets the lion’s share.

A much more even mission than the previous two posted so far.
Maybe there’s hope for my Adler yet.

Several pilots have flown their last mission, but no POW or KIA at least.
Looking forward to getting this one going. Maybe this weekend.

REP gun is still jammed. Guess I need more posts to like ...

    P.S. REP Gun unjammed

That was quite a do for Mullaney - he's a lucky chap for a newbie and no mistake

    Uncle says:

Well done you chaps you saw off the Hun in that meeting but not without loss, the chaps are dinged up and won't be back before the end, the other side fared about the same and may need some new faces before they continue.
Have to say the paperwork was shocking for a veteran - particularly for the Hun results, found meself rummaging about in the body of the AAR looking for answers, at least you highlighted kills in the text which helped but please use the format provided as it saves so much time for me.
Herr Creutzmann finally gets a victory and gains his silver pilots badge - will he get a second ? And a belated update of a wound badge in gold.
Herr Addix gains his second victory and is awarded the Iron Cross second class before retiring from the field wounded & collecting a wound badge in silver.

Good show for Mullaney, the boy might make it through this mess.

Nice touch with having the Hun aces fire first. I probably should have given them a temporary skill, Good tweak. Overall they still took a
    beating. Well done Bulldogs!
