Thread: AIM update

    Default AIM update

Just heard from Dave (AIM) and the Fw 200 is out now. I did see that the Gladiator is on the site and Dave said the new Hurricane is also there. I just added the Fw 200 to the order I placed. Can't wait to get the Fw200

Over the Atlantic. Convoy hunting and attack.

Karl is correct. They were used to recon convoys and call in U-boats. Later they were fitted with the FRITZ guided missile. For me I thought about using it as a WHAT IF game like WHAT IF the Germans used it as a long range bomber. I had a model of one when I was a kid and thought it was a cool looking plane so Dave came up with it. many thanks to him for that.

Also don't forget he has the Gladiator now on his site so those that want more of them you can get them from him.

So a small window of use for these if staying strictly with historical operations.

Yeh, pretty much. It wasn't a great plane for the mission, just one the Germans had.
AFAIK, they never escorted them, and if they did, it would have been with Ju.88s over the Bay of Biscay.
They did do normal bombing and strafing of shipping too.
The bombload wasn't big enough to warrent using them on long ranged bombing missions, and there were never a lot of them.
I'll dig out my Osprey on them and check for anything different.
If we'r going for What-Ifs, I'd go with He.155s. Or maybe Do.19s with better engines (the W.I. is that the Germans kept making and upgrading them, as in

it also had a disconcerting habit of breaking its back on rough landings or sometimes just due to stress.

In my AirFile book ALDER GEGEN ENGLAND it says that between Aug 40 and Feb 41 Fw 200's sank 50 ships so they did good until the CAM (Catapult Aircraft Merchantman) came into being. Here is an idea for a game.
An allied convoy in the Med is heading to Egypt or it could be a Malta convoy. The Germans and/or Italians launch airstrikes against the convoy.
The Germans have 2 Fw 200's escorted by Me-109's or Fw 190's.
The Italian's have Sm 79's escorted by Mc 202's.
The British may have a CVE with the convoy or send planes from Malta to protect the convoy.

Semi historical as the British did sent out planes from Malta to provide air cover to convoys passing their way.

Fw200s were used extensively on the Eastern front in the transport role, notably at Stalingrad.

Don't forget they were build at airliners and then adapted in the recon and bomber role. How about a supply run to Stalingrad Fw 200 and some Ju52's with Fw 190 or Me 109 escorts ? Historical game.

Just received an email from Kevin (MISCMINI) that he has the Fw-200 decals done. They are for 8/KG 40. Now I guess I have to get another Condor to along with the first one.

Just received and email from Dave (AIM) that the Sterling should be out in a few weeks and he is working on a Halifax model along with B-17 E/F/G and the Russian Pe 8. I guess we are keeping him busy which is a good thing.

Good news on Dave's current work list. I'll be ordering very soon. Time to get some B-29s...and I'm sure several others more than I should!

Isn't that the truth. Well keeps me out of trouble painting, not to your abilities, and just enjoying things to do. Good think Kevin tries to keep up with his decals.
