Default Official Albatros J.I painting thread

Here are a couple Alb J.Is. These are from Shapeways, designed by Daryl of ReducedAircraftFactory.

These had their maiden flight at Origins in Operation Blucher-Yorck. The one with the stripes didn't have the top wing stripes then though as I did this yesterday. The same plane had a broken machine gun so I had to drill a small hole and attach an appropriate piece of hobby wire for the gun barrel. (see 2nd photo, no barrel!)

I find that future works quite well, but you need several coats. I just put that down for planning, doing several at once.

    Super nice work. Gorgeous results.

Here's to them what are like us. Damn few and they're all dead.

Superb job! That was actually my first airplane modeled (of, now, about 200), and I had not yet figured out how to do some subtle rib-effects on the wings. But your paint job has made all that a dont-care -- it came out spendidly. I especially like the plywood panel separations and the tail stripes.

Gorgeous stuff here, Peter! The wood fuselage looks remarkable, and I love the wing colors and markings - very pretty planes. I would be proud to have them in my collection.

    Thanks for the continued inspiration

    All the best,
    Matt

    Thanks again guys.

I didn't have a mauve close to what I've seen on models and artwork so had to mix some up. After adding and adding and adding I finally gave up and settled on what you see. Of course a week after I found a German WWI set of colors! Next planes I'll trust to the new paints. The set is by AK Interactive.

    List of colors

AK2271 - WWI German Fokker Grey
AK2272 - WWI German Light Green
AK2273 - WWI German Dark Green
    AK2274 - WWI German Mauve
AK2275 - WWI German Red Brown
AK2276 - WWI German Light Blue
    AK2277 - WWI German Lilac
    AK2278 - WWI German Grey-Green Primer

I found them, too, at www.hobbylinc.com - they are out of Atlanta, Georgia, and have both of these sets. They also have a third set of 4 RFC/RNAS colors. I think I will have to order these three sets - I have seen the German set used by Jim/rhodie80 first-hand, and they really look good. I'm sorry I missed seeing yours at Origins, Peter...

    All the best,
    Matt

I got the original set of paints on Ebay. They came from the Czech Republic and took a couple of weeks to get here. Amazon has them. I ordered the RFC/RNAS paint set and it is fantastic.

    AK 2281 PC10 Early
    AK 2282 PC10 Late
    AK 2283 PC12
    AK 2284 Battleship Grey

I have found them online in Spain; the postage to the UK is not too bad.

They are Airbrush paints, aren't they?

Ah, I forgot to mention the RFC/RNAS set. I got that one too.

Tim, I have used Vallejo's airbrush paints with a normal brush and they work great. I have their WW2 sets. They don't have WWI sets...yet.

I, too, have used Vallejo airbrush colors as brush paints - I have been very happy with how they've worked. I've also used them on a couple of the counters boxes I've made, and they work wonderfully - perhaps the only thing is an extra coat or two is needed...but they are nice and thin and are made for multiple coats with a brush.

I am looking forward to getting some of the AK paints...

    All the best,
    Matt

Thanks guys. Its always fun to get some new 'different' planes on the table. Second time I had some AEG JIIs up my wife flew one. Like the Alb JIs they have only downward firing front guns. Wouldn't you know it, she got to fly above someone and got a shot at a plane! Sadly it didn't go down, that would have been priceless.

Maybe we need to give either of the J planes a Becker cannon to plink some tanks next Origins.

A couple of beautiful J birds, Peter. That is some great woodgrain. I don't have these, went with Junkers. Must resist!

I don't think pulling up a painting thread is applicable to the Thread Necromancer. I actually like it when someone pulls up an old painting thread I haven't seen. Usually leads me to buying more planes!

Thanks for the kind words Chris.
