Post R.I.P. Major Edward "Mick" Mannock V.C.

Today 26th July one hundred years ago "Mick" Mannock was sadly shot down by ground fire & killed.
Like MvR he broke one of his own rules & followed down an enemy plane he had damaged so one of his rookie pilots could earn his first victory.
Mick was one of the greatest Flight & Squadron commanders for the British forces & taught & led his pilots in exemplary fashion.
    R.I.P Mick Mannock!

A ceremony was held at the Old Steine War Memorial Brighton on 24th July to unveil a commemorative stone honouring Mannock who was born in the town (as it was then) at Preston Barracks in 1887.
The commemorative stone is part of a national scheme that will see every VC recipient of WW1 honoured with a paving stone in their birth place, to provide a lasting legacy to local heroes.
Mannock’s stone is the third to be laid at the war memorial. Previous ceremonies were held to honour Captain Theodore Wright VC and Second Lieutenant Ernest Beal VC.

It is a great pity that he did not survive the war. May he rest in peace.

Great pilot, great leader, great example to others.
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

    Thumbs up

found this great painting of Mick Mannock by Rodger Middlebrook in a tribute thread over on the Aerodrome Historical Forum.
In an interesting aside it was recorded he shot down 18 Pfalz D.IIIa's.
