Here are a few miscellaneous photos from the "Bombing the Reich" WWI scenario run by Phillip the first night at Origins.
My very first WWI game. My primary interest has always been WWII just because I've read about so many of the planes and - in comparison - don't know anywhere as much about WWI aircraft. However, I did have some toy WWI planes when I was a kid. One of them was the Fokker DR7, and - sure enough - there was one available, even painted white like the one I used to have. I do have to say I was disappointed to find out that the DR7 is out of print.
My intention was to write up a turn-by-turn AAR for each battle I was in, but although I did pretty well with the first one I failed miserably this time. I was too caught up in trying to learn the differences between the WWI game and WWII, and mostly forgot about getting photos. This one is near the beginning of the scenario. I found out quickly that in the WWI game 1) planes don't (usually) deal out as much damage, and 2) the bombers are TOUGH. Here I am getting in a good shot at the Handley Page. Unfortunately, I was also in the not-so-sweet spot where I was in the arc of both the front and rear guns. I would go spinning to the earth shortly later.
Some people are more into Wings of Glory than other people...
The Caproni goes down. Unfortunately I had nothing to do with it.
A wide view of the battlefield. As you can see, Ken is shooting back at me.
The Caproni goes down again. This time I absolutely had something to do with it.
My first impressions of the WWI game were positive. Playing three cards at a time takes some getting used to. The greater maneuverability of the planes makes them a lot of fun to fly. I'm glad I decided to give WWI a chance. I might have to see if I can work in some more WWI battles during the rest of the convention.
