I know WoW is not a precise simulation, but I do wonder what the intended ground scale (certainly not 1:144). About 7" for a machine gun's useful range? So, 50 yds and inch or so?

One reason I ask is the tendency of aces to wait until under 100 yards to fire at all, and then down a plane with a few shots. Add to that all the discussion in memoirs about rookies firing form too far away... I was looking for some reason to hold fire until close range (altitude may force that). Perhaps I should study those ammunition limitation house rule suggestions I have seen.

On the other hand, I do not want to simulate hanging from the stuck Lewis ammo drum while swinging to get back into the cockpit...

Sounds about right. Discussions about weapon range tend to come up from time to time, and IIRC someone worked out that the ruler was around 350 yards based on the size of the aircraft card images (which agrees with anecdotal evidence about typical maximum aircraft engagement range in WW1). Couldn't spot the thread, probably was about something else and went off on a tangent, happens a lot round here
