Thread: Otto Kissenberth's Albatross D.V and Pfalz D.III question

    Default Otto Kissenberth's Albatross D.V and Pfalz D.III question

    I’ve recently got a nice Edelweiss’s decal and I’m thinking about doing one of Otto Kissenberth’s planes, either his Albatros D.Va or Pfalz D.III

    I like having two or four planes within the same Jasta or Squadron when I do repainting, so I thought I could match up Kissenberth’s plane with some other Jasta 16b or Jasta 23b airplanes.
    I’ve found a few Jasta 16b profiles that I like such as these ones:

    Name: Jasta 16b Pfalz D.IIIa. Vzfw Max Holtzem 2.jpg
Views: 1707
Size:  36.7 KB

    (I could take advantage of series 4 reprint for this Max Holtzem's Pfalz)

    Do any of you know if is it historically correct to match up Edelweiss’ marked Kissenberth’s Albatros D.V or Pfalz D.III in together with the above Jasta 16b Pfalz?

    Thanks in advance

    Anwering to myself (after further research) it seems those sexy black birds with the Edelweiss were from when Kissenbergth was leading Jasta 23b -- not while he was with Jasta 16b ...

    I've been trying to delete the thread but I coudnt find a tool for that.

    So ... question turns to: do any of you can think of a couple of sexy aircrafts from Jasta 23b to fly with Lt. Kissenberght? (his own re-painted Camel would be an obvious answer and I'm already planning to get one of those from T&T)

    Thanks for giving me the idea for my next repaint!
    Think I will do the DVa. Cheers!

    Otto Kissenberth also flew a Roland D.VIa whilst he was part of Jasta 23.

    Wikipedia lists the following as notable members of Jasta 23.

    Balloon buster Friedrich Ritter von Röth Pour le Merite, Hohenzollern, Iron Cross, Military Order of Max Joseph;
    Michael Hutterer Iron Cross;
    Theodor Rumpel Iron Cross;
    Johannes Janzen Iron Cross.

    According to Osprey's Albatros Aces of World War 1 (vol 1) Kissenberth had the edelweiss emblem on his 'black fuselaged Albatros D.V' whilst in Jasta 16b. (detail on p.43 with pic). Whether that info has since proved incorrect I don't know. The book also has plates of two so marked aircraft attributed to him in both in Jasta 16b & Jasta 23b.
    The one shown in Jasta 16b has no serial number and specifies a cdl rudder (not white), The other has serial D2263 & a black rudder.
    16b D.V:

    It seems he may not have been with 16b very long before moving to 23b at the end of August 1917 shortly before the unit was issued their first Pfalz D.III. (Osprey's Pfalz Aces of World War 1. p.45)

    Thanks Dave! That's great info!
    I'll do the Albatross D.Va with clear ruder and pair it with Holtzem's and maybe another 16b Pfalz

    Further research shows JASTA 16b had some more interesting Albatros D.V

    Jasta 16B aircraft

    Albatros D.V---- Aug17-Apr18
    Pfalz D.III------- Sep17-Jun18, never fully equipped
    Pfalz D.III a---- Mar18-Jun18
    Albatros D.Va---unk-last known victory was May18

    Fokker DR.I----- Apr18-May18

    I cannot answer your question specifically but, generally, yes they flew Albatros D.Vs and Pfalz D.IIIs together.

    Jasta 23b

    Otto Kissenberth 13 victories at J23b and total 20 victories he was transferred to J23b from J16b on 04Aug17 and was there until 29May18 due to a crash in a Captured Camel.

    The point was that he wasn't with Jasta 16b when they had Pfalz D.III Ezekiel, he left before they received the type. Maybe you could match his 23b aircraft with 23b Pfalz if they had them ?

    My understanding is that these guys do their research, so I put Jasta 16b as the unit, and Leutnant as the rank.

    Fantastic work there Mike! Rep inbound!

    Is that purple and camo green for the wing tops? I've seen a few grey and camo coloured pics while googling his DV. Interesting.

    Just finished my Kissenberth DV.
    Only my 4th repaint but pretty happy with it. Didn't do the white tail.

    Really nice Steven! Kudos!
    Brush or airbrush?

    Tail should be wooden not white for the J16b

    All my work is brush, never had the confidence to try an airbrush.

    I used this site for the colors: Modelblitz.blogspot.ca - Albatros D.V, Otto Kissenberth, Wingnut Wings, 1/32

    Thanks for the compliments Mike, Barry and David!
    Mike, I used the modelblitz site for some inspiration but decided to go with purple instead of grey on the wing tops ( the photos don't show that too well poor lighting), it may not be 100% accurate but looks cool. Cheers for the cards and links!

    Gorgeous work. I love that you are working on a Jasta.

    Here's to them what are like us. Damn few and they're all dead.
