Thread: RIP Gunny.

    Default RIP Gunny.

Sad to see the passing of R. Lee Ermey, probably best remembered as the Drill Instructor in “Full Metal Jacket”, who died Sunday from complications of pneumonia aged 74.

He was a staff sergeant who also served as a drill instructor in the US Marine Corps & served in Vietnam who, thirty years after leaving the Marine Corps, received an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant for his continued support of the U.S. military.

    Outstanding.

Take you place on heaven's streets Gunny. Semper Fi.

Saw that today. One of the things I saw said he was most well known for his portrayal of the "sadistic" DI in Full Metal Jacket. When I saw that I knew that the person who wrote that never went to Basic Training and was never a Marine. He was a great patriot in my mind. RIP

That was pretty much as libed on his part. Speaking to one of my marine buddies, who was at PI for two years, he was spot on. “DI's used to have competions to see who could make a recruit cry first...”. I may make fun of Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children, but they are, recruit for recruit, the toughest SOBs around. Sadistic my butt; tear ‘em down and build ‘em back up into a team. You’re right, the reporter was cluless.

What I miss is his show Mail Call. Fantastic bit of TV. Plus his support of the troops never waivered. Semper Fi.

Saw this today on You tube. There were a lot of weapons clips where he compared different small arms. Lots of fun to watch. He will be missed.

I never realized he was a RL DI. That explains a lot...

Hugh Daly, a friend of mine, worked on Mail Call with him. He introduced me to him at the Show of Shows in Louisville. Gunny was quite colorful and excited to get out and buying memorabilia. I was lucky to get to meet him.

Here's to them what are like us. Damn few and they're all dead.

I always liked this guy from when I first saw him in the film Siege at Firebase Gloria. I think 'Enthusiasm' must have been his middle name.

    RIP Gunny, loved your work.

Good candidate for tributes from this forum given his Vietnam service was with the Marine Wing Support Group 17, a USMC aviation ground support unit.
