Thread: Official Farman MF11 - Shorthorn - Painting Thread

Default Official Farman MF11 - Shorthorn - Painting Thread

Couldn't find an existing official thread, so I hope this is not a duplicate.

Maurice Farman MF11 (Reduced Aircraft Factory - Shapeways). I'm not sure if the armed version was used by the RFC and if so when or by whom. I also cannot find any images of an RFC version with roundels, so I don't know if my model should have them, or some other identification. Can anyone advise please?

    Very nice Mike.

I've looked but haven't found any with RFC roundels. Belgian and French I have seen.

I do like the Belgian ones. I may have to get some for my budding Belgian Air Service.
So how many books are in your personal library?

Top-down images are better for doing cards, if you want close reproduction of the paint schemes. And pilot/unit info could assist with making a card.

This is what I have for Georg's planes above:

Perfect for me. Unfortunately, I do not have units or pilots, so "unknown" will do the job for me

    Fine looking model, Mike.

In his memoir, Capt Duncan Grinnell-Milne describes his experiences flying the Farman Shorthorn while he was assigned to No.16 Squadron, RFC. According to Grinnell-Milne, the plane was a pleasure to fly. I don't recall a description of aircraft markings in his book, so leaving the model without roundels, etc., is probably correct.

Grinnell-Milne wrote of his MF.11 being armed with Lewis machine gun manned by his observer. In October, 1915, he attacked a German observation balloon, peppering it with bullets. But lacking incendiary ammunition, they did little damage before the balloon was hauled down.

I've already got one, but haven't painted it up yet.

Nice job on your group, Georg!
