GOG (Grand Ole Games) is usually a good place to go for that: Wing Commander™ 1+2. But I don't know where he goes.

GOG has a lot of the old games they modify to run on current machines. I have the X-Wing and TIE Fighter series.

P.S. Kind of like Steam Powered but has, mostly, older games.

He gets loads of stuff from GOG too but he can run that game from his original disks. Clever blighter.

I use GOG a lot also.

Here's a Q&A from one of their forums.

    Q. I'm just wondering this. Are all games on this site modified to work on new systems? Do they change the games ui or anything? Is it original?

    A. Depend's game you are talking about. DOS era games are ran either using DOSBox or ScummVM. For old Windows (Windows 95 onwards) games, GOG removes DRM (major cause of incompatibility) if it still exists and finds compatibility settings that are most apropriate for game. They may also use various programs and libraries to make it work (nGlide, modified ddraw.dll etc.) and may modify (hack basically) the executable somewhat to implement fixes as need be. GOG has no access to source code so their ability to modify them is limited (usually implementing their own versions of fan made fixes). In couple rare cases GOG has also resorted to using unofficial patches, but that's pretty much last resort.

GOG also builds and maintains it's own installers so those old installers aren't problem either.

Do note that some cases GOG has worked directly with developers and in some cases developers have made upgrades to games themselves. In such cases modifications are more extensive thanks to access to source code and can range from improving compatibility, higher resolution support and improved UI's to complete overhauls.

Sorry that's not X-Wing, these images have ben shot and published years before X-Wing's release.

Anyway, just look at Battlestar Galactica's miniature base allowing you top go in a direction while you rotate and shoot in another.
This is a space combat game, not a clone of "Wings of War in space".

That's a really cool option and displays the BSG series space battles very well.

Well Andrea now I am quite upset . I was firmly committed to sparing my wallet any more extravagances. But if this has the mechanics as you're describing I'll definitely have to keep an eye out. I really don't need another collectible game but this sounds unique enough that it may be worth looking at.

Argh... the harder I try to stay away, the more they pull me in. Is it time to surrender to the seduction of this hobby?

Hoping down the road they go for the Original BSG ships. Liked the reboot but have fond memories of the original series. Be interesting to see how a 3 crewman Cylon raider wold work. Heck still have a copy of the FASA board game sitting here.

It is good that the Battlestar Galactica game seems to have avoided the production problems that have plagued Triopods and Triplanes.

New game, new market. We are a minor group of hangers on, I don't think we are worthy of their effort. It is getting old to be on the back burner of the stove next door. We are the last of the humans and the Cylons are on the rise . . . Feel like a toaster doesn't it . . .

The efforts are the usual ones or even more. The problems have been on quality of WWI reprints, and that's been totally unexpected since it was something that should have been as smooth as ever. We worked on them with the usually accuracy, but something in the factory went badly wrong. Tripods & Triplanes has been involved in the delay since there are WWI planes in the very T&T box (Nieuport 16) and in the stretch goals of the Kickstarter.
This jammed the production. It will be a very intense period of releases when all the stuff will arrive, with both Series 1 and Series 4 + Tripods & Triplanes. Battlestar Galactica is reaching shelves too, but not having planes inside it has been unaffected.

Working now on these. Stay tuned.

Intrigued to know what the scope of model releases will be. For the original series it's the Viper, colonial shuttle and Cylon fighter, for the new series the new Viper, stealth Viper (one off?), Colin fighter and the Cylon heavy raider thingie. Anything else "canon"? And if the range will cover the original series, any chance of co erinv it's stable mate, Buck Rogers? There were some lovely fighters in that series

There are a few official variants. Then, large ships. We'll consider the sister series, thanks!

What is the scale of BSG? Is it the same as X-Wing or slightly larger like WGS?

Never heard of a game called X-Wing after FFG cancelled the “Wings of War X-Wing” project.

Anyway, BSG-SG minis for fighters will be 1/160, something in between WGF 1/144 and WGS 1/200.

1/160 is N gauge in model railway terms, so anyone doing dioramas can use that scale of figures for deck crew.

    N scale - 1:160 - 9mm
Preiser Model Figures has a few figures in this scale that might work.

If he builds a Cylon Basestar, he wll need a warehouse to contain it (about 110 metres in diameter).

The actual scale isn't mentioned, but...

Salzo Battlestar Galactica half studio scale - 1 meter long

PS: Missed it, but it was mentioned. 1/1950-ish. So, 1/10th the size it would be on the table with this game?

    The rough scale is mentioned:
Here it is beside his little 1/4105th brother (from my rag tag fleet diorama).
The scale of the large Galactica is between 1/1900 and 1/2000th scale.
That is some piece of modelling - what a beast

No he won't. He had a theological objection with the LDS in the first series and with the second series highjackking a subtext woven through with "All Along the Watchtower", he has sidded with Dylan in the aftermath. . . So, no gallactica here past, present, future, and in all parallel space time dimensions . . . sorry for the rant.

Bar none the best space space fighter battles ever. The things acted like real space craft, not just airplanes in space. Still bummed the B5 computer game got shelved.

I remember that game and the models David, I agree they looked good but I never indulged.
I thought I saw it mentioned a B5 themed Glory game but looks like it was just wishful thinking as I cant find the comment again.
The next space game I got into was GW Battlefleet Gothic, which I thought was excellent with some great models.

Bony, Did you have to mention BSG??...still have 5K points of Imps, about 2 K chaos, 3K Eldar and a few K of Orks. Loved the game and started refurbishing everything about 2 years ago when they were reworking Specialist games. They never did bring it or Warmaster back (another game I was deep into with large armies stored).

They closed down some years ago. A shame, the models were lovely. They published a complex set of rules, but there was also an official "Full Thrust"-based set that were way better

The game was called 'Babylon 5 Wars' and, as David said, it was produced by Agents of Gaming.
