Thread: Battlestar Galactica – Starship Battles

Andrea very generously let me fly his"damaged"Cylon ship which got blasted by Andy (Hawkhurst )
A simple game to learn with elements of Sails and WG in the manoeuvre cards. It certainly was a fun game and on my list of must buy games. Thanks Andrea for letting us have a preview game

Play tested the Galactica Game with Andrea and others at Prague Con on Sunday. Very privileged to have been asked to do this. Enjoyed myself immensely playing with the prototypes and as joint winner with Tim 'Flying Helmet' of the game (two kills each) were awarded a couple of the prototype ships, stands and rules to be able to play again.
Now very much looking forward to the upcoming launch which Andrea assured us would be by the end of the year.
Thank you Andrea for the experience!

Thanks to all of you for taking part in the demo and to have the patience to face the advance rules directly, without passing through the basic ones - you did it really well.

Paul, don’t tell Tim about the Sails bit, or he won’t buy it

I am looking at BBG and other sites with images, and all I can see is an X-Wing clone (space ships and asteroids). And those dreaded multi-facetted randomization devices.

    Daniel,

When I want to roll dice, I suffer playing this: Alpha Omega RPG - Characters: SID-422

My Character is an Artificial Intelligent robot. So, pretty much a Cylon.

Fix easily done, if you are really allergic. Take two sets, take all damage chits from one set, take only 0s from the other, mix. Use these without dice.

More on that after the game is published.

Not sure, but the Forum will not, if I understand the sub-routines correctly, differentiate between sections of the Forum. Darn.

Each time you view a post, the Forum checks your current avatar and banner, and presents that on all your posts. They don't keep the images on each, in a historical manner. Go look at any post by Andrea, and they should all be a Viper, now.

Oh thats a ***** Given all the trouble the server has had this last year writing code to allow a separate banner for a BSG sub Forum might just blow its little chips.

I've got the Cylon Base Star, but never did find a Battlestar kit.

I built the two halves separately, and used each as a space station for "Full Thrust"

Also have the Cylon Raider - it's about 12 inches across (bit too big for this game!)

    Questions to the Prague testplayers:

Are there a kind of "altitude rules" to bring some 3D feeling on the table?

Heared about collision with an ateroid.

Are there ship to ship collissions possible, or can the fighters overlap like in the WoG system?

    Hi Sven

Yes, there are altitude rules (but we did not use them in the Prague game)

Yes, there was a collision with an asteroid () <<sorry Steve!>> but since an asteroid can be a couple of miles in diameter, this is pretty realistic!

Ships can overlap just like in 'Wings of War/Glory'.

Altitude in space combat is hard to imagine and portrait.
Once I used to play a great PC game "Tie Fighter" where I could stop the action and get a quasi 3D map/location of all the starhsips. Believe me, I felt like drunk walking upside down trying to figure out where I actually am!
There is no point of reference from which one could measure "altitude", IMHO.

Sven you are forgetting that there is no up or down in space so I would think that altitude does not really apply. Mind you I could be wrong, I have been before! There were no collisions in the trial game just overlaps.

Yes Reg, but who says that the battle took place only on one imagined level/plain?

Up and down depend on the ship, you‘re flying and the horizont it uses to dermine it‘s position in relation to the flight direction and positions/movements of other objects to itself.

If I say altitude, I used this word to simplify the question and want to know if enemies can approach or fly away in more directions, than being glued to one level/plain like X-Wing.

Talking about conditions an parameters in space battles in English is no easy.

If you imagine a little bit 3D to the game - overlapping should not prevent shooting in general, but the heading of the ship should.

So if a Cylon overlaps with your Viper, presenting you his rear side and your guns point at him, you should be able to blow him out of space.
    Voilเ le soleil d'Austerlitz!

At all I‘m happy about your answers.

Sold my X-Wing stuff long time ago, but hated those „collision - then loose your action stuff“.

Don't put yourself down Sven I couldn't even start in German!
As far as I can see the game is played on one level but I suppose there might be the option of the altitude pegs being introduced as in Wings. You would have to ask Andrea I think.

Agreed . The game allows for 3 levels of altitude for want of a better word 0 -1 +1 so collisions will only occur at the same level. i got the impression from Andrea that the models would come with pegs same as WG

    So did I.

The control console for each ship comes with a slider for "Altitude" -1 0 +1

I'm with you on this. I grew up with the original series with Lorne Greene et.al and the original BSG, Viper and Cylon raiders. I the only problems I had with the reboot was making Starbuck "Female" Sorry, but Starbuck was a "woman chaser". Having a female as a cigar chomping hard case just didn't do it for me.
I did like the new vipers and the new support ships and making their pilots more than just a backdrop. Having one or two of them as forefront characters rather than NPC's if you will was great. I did kinda like the new cylon raiders, but... And the new Cylons were cool.

If I remember the t.v. series correctly, deliberate ramming was definitely a Cylon tactic.
