Thread: Be Dazzled!

    Default Be Dazzled!

Whilst recovering on the couch after some nasty knee procedures, I was thrilled when Mrs Clipper showed me her latest gift for the NZ grandson who is suddenly into WWI naval battles. Where does she find such treasures! Now I want a copy!!!!

    Interesting book, Dave.

Nice find Mrs Clipper - wonder if its suitable for a four year old grand daughter who is into ninjas; a four year old grand son, plus his younger, two year old, brother!!!! Or perhaps I should get a copy and keep it for them for when they are older

Dazzle Ships. I have the album. Not the best of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, IMHO.

I have that album also Mike!

Clipper, I hope said grandson saw the TV show recently that was on here in NZ!
It included a decent section on the dazzle ships & the guy who thought the paint
job would be a brilliant way to disguise something so big.

I thought those paint jobs in WWI were to confuse subs and ships as to the range and speed of camoed vessels?

EDIT: I just realized disguise proabaly didn’t mean hide in this case. Oops, my bad.

Heh heh - no worries Joe!
But yes, your supposition as to my intent was correct.
They pointed out in the show that the intent was to confuse, as there was just no way to 'hide' something
so big. Especially with the technology at the time.

The show itself was really cool. They did a really simplistic experiment with the presenter using a periscope &
pretending to be a sub. He only had a few seconds to guess the distance, heading & speed of a motorboat.
They tried it with & without dazzle paint.
He wasn't great with a normal boat, but he was hopeless with the dazzle paint.

An antique fire boat painted in a "dazzle" design sailed past my place this morning. Here is quick photo I shot and a news story and TV video about it.

There was a show on COMBAT SHIPS (Smithsonian channel) that had and episode about this. Very interesting on the info they put out.

The retired fireboat painted in "dazzle" design previously discussed on this thread was briefly docked across the river from me this morning. It is sailing up and down the Hudson giving rides on the boat. This boat (before it was painted this way) was called out of retirement to fight the massive fires in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001. When the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed they crushed all the water lines in the area seriously debilitating the fire fighters (many surrounding buildings were damaged as well) thus necessitating calling this boat back into service. Today marks the 17th anniversary of that day when 3,000 Americans were murdered. Pretty much every village in the Hudson Valley on the commuter rail line into New York City had to tow cars from their train stations of people who went to work that morning and never returned.
