Default WWI AAR - Fokker Dr.Is vs. Sopwith Camels - December 9, 2017

    Better late than never...

Just now posting my last AAR from 2017! I made a goal to plan a dedicated gaming day, with my wife's permission of course, at least once every 4-6 weeks. I only missed in November due to several last minute cancellations. We played at Madness Games and Comics in Plano, TX on Saturday, December 9th.

We used the Basic, Standard Rules and Altitude rules (max. altitude 4 "by the book"). We also played with the collision rules...last time ever!

Entente Powers - Mike Jones (aka Dwarflord22) & Brian Simmons (late arrival)
Central Powers - Mark Swenholt & Marcus (walk up player)

1 - Mark Swenholt Central Powers

2 - Mike Jones (aka Dwarflord22) Entente Powers

    3 - Lothar Smoked by a Camel

4 - Brian Simmons Joins The Fray for the Entente Powers

5 - Marcus Reinforces the Central Powers

6 - Rahn Closing on Stackard

7 - Lothar and Ellwood Collide!

8 - Stackard and Ellwood Collide

    9 - Lothar Goes Down

10 - Ellwood Limps Off With One Damage Point Left

11 - Stackard Closing In on Rahn, But Guns are Jammed!

    12 - Stackard Goes Down

13 - Rahn Wins The Day With No Damage

    Those collisions were brutal!

I use the collision resolution cards from the files section.
    No automatic damage at least.

And what can I say about Rahn ....

But then that might be the case if I was flying Entente against him ....

    Thumbs up

Mike those collisions were just Deadly!
That Rahn was sure a lucky little Hun.
Thanks for the AAR & Pics.

Aaah Collisions Cringe. Yes, brings back memories of aquiring a bad reputation. But hey ho, part of the game I guess. You live and learn. Or at least I wish I would

Thanks for sharing Mike - like the venue - big place

Rahn sure was! If you noticed, two of his four zero damage cards were drawn from the C deck due to collisions!!

Great AAR. We haven’t used the collisions yet. Are they usually that deadly?

The collisions can be very deadly! You can see Stackard drew a 10 and a zero for his two collisions, while Rahn drew two zeros. Ellwood drew a 6, 4 and zero for his THREE collisions. Lothar drew a 6, 2 and zero for his THREE collisions.

    Collisions are a crapshoot.
I once had 4 in a row where both planes drew 0. I just did an AAR in the OTT Campaign where I drew an Explosion.
My only thing about collisions is that I wish we could add the special damage, such as, Pilot wound, Engine DMG, Fire, and Smoke DMG as well. I know the rules at this time say don't, but I think it would add and possibly deter people who are determined or prone to use that kind of attack.
I try to avoid them as much as possible.

I agree - not sure of the logic in not counting it.

(although I guess I am glad I didn't have to count the pilot wound with the 6 in my last AAR)

It's all about the climb tokens Men. As long as you have one or more and the guy crashing into you does not, the collision is avoided. There is a guy we play with that is notorious for collisions. We check his tokens all the time to be safe and avoid many collisions that way! In addition, our group uses the peg (red dot on the card) and the model as a basis for determining a collision rather than the general overlapping of the base. If the models touch, or the peg (red dot on the card) is covered by the other plane you have a crash. I think it is a bit more realistic this way and you already have the planes as a visual aid. We find this very useful with Bombers as their base does not take into account the size of the model. This is just our "House Rule" but we all surly enjoy it.

Your right Jim about the climb tokens or lack there of.
I normally go peg to peg for my collisions and have even gone so far as to say an 1/8 of an inch from the peg is a collision.
I guess when designing this game they wanted it to be more family friendly and ease of play so they decided to leave that element out of it.
I think that if two planes collide there is always a chance of something serious happening. The same way something serious could happen if hit by AA fire. I can see in WGF a splinter or piece of wood hitting the pilot in a front or side collision as well as something happening to the Engine in a head on collision.
