Thread: MARCH 2018 WORKBENCH

    Default MARCH 2018 WORKBENCH

    Hello all,

I just finished a Werner Voss DR.1 and am quite pleased how it turned out. I have also finalized some other planes I did in February with a clear coat of Testers Clear Flat Lacquer through my airbrush tonight. The DR.1 and all others were completely taken apart and stripped. There is a lot of detail in these little planes that gets lost with thick coats of paint.

    Those planes look fantastic!
I must try my hand on Voss's tripe one day, but the camp puts me off (it is hard to get a true to original effect).

Beautiful work, Jim! You're a better man than I, stripping those little suckers down and refinishing 'em - but I cannot argue with the effect you get. The camo on Voss's plane looks very nice, as does the work on each of the others...

    All the best,
    Matt

How do you get them to come aprart so cleanly? I would have thought all sorts of parts would snap from removal.

    Oh, nice job btw!

Sucker for the green/cdl finish so went with that, popped a Lewis gun robbed from a Strutter bomber conversion on the top plane.

Excellent job Dave, very clean. I like the attention to detail like the wood stock on the machine gun.

Very nice repaints...But the collector in me still cringes every time I see a repaint...sigh

  9. #9

    Default

Me too, but it's only Money! Then again, these re-paints are special to the people that do them and add a "uniqueness" to the table and their collection. I have also seen many re-paints selling for "Collector Values". As a matter of fact, the Purple Wing Fokker in my pictures above is an idea I copied from one that just sold on EBAY for $47 this week (Wolfram Von Ricthoven) and a Custom Painted Captured Sopwith flown by Otto Kissenberth sold for $55 not too long ago! Who would have thought that a ten dollar SE5A or a red DIII would fetch over five times their value? I look back at my Gotha Re-Paints and cringe knowing that I have seen some sell for ridiculous amounts, but then again they are done, unique, and more importantly...mine. Don't be afraid to repaint, all the cool kids are doing it!

I stick to Shapeways for my paint jobs as it allows me to field planes not in production Yet (still). Also the ONLY way I can field DH2's. Trick with shapeways is to get the old WoW box sets for the maneuver decks and plane cards. Same with the old Decks of planes and cards they sold. With that as a base Shapeways is your friend (though the cost is still higher then a plane box in the end).

Beautiful work but expensive. While taking nothing away from your exceptional work, as you are stripping them down to virtually kit form would it not be a lot cheaper and easier to start with a kit? Valom or Skytrex for instance?

Yes the kits are cheaper and easier but plane and simple, the Wings planes are more durable. The Valom kits being scaled perfectly, have thin photo etched brass parts, struts and the like, and are very fragile. They must be handled very carefully because of their delicate nature. When you have a large group of players ranging in age, this sometimes does not happen. The WoW planes are designed for play and the abuse that comes with it and we can all agree that some parts are over-sized for this reason. You also get that nice weight from the WoW planes metal Fuselage. Besides, I'm retired and I have to look busy or the Wife will put me to work!!!

  15. #15

    Default

Yeah! You're correct the etched parts on the Valom kits are flimsy and I find hard to fit. Throw them away and use brass wire which is what I do on the Skytrex aircraft.
Still whatever turns you on go with it.
As for your last sentence, I'm also retired and always try to look busy but she still finds lots of things for me to do.

Nice. I just got a book on the Sino-Japanese war and am heading there. I have Ki-10s but want to get some Hawks, I-153s and I-16s. Already have the Ki-27s and bombers.

Thanks for your kind comments, chaps.
Of course it would be hard (if possible!) to airbrush the cockpits. in this case only windows and props were hand painted however.
Air brushing partly covered (with sticky tack) object is a fast piece of cake (thus I usually cover several planes this way) that gives it a perfect thin paint layer and smooth edges.
Covering all 4 Mossies with green sprayed over grey basecoat (sprayed) took about 2 minutes, no more).

@Bob: A very nice mini there, Bob - it's painted in proper colours (you used very right UK green; I am not completely satisfied with that Pactra number of mine) and decaled - looks superb .
@Steve: I used Tamyia maskin tape to get sharp and straight edges between upper and lower surfaces, but thick white/blue sticky tack (like that of Clipper's) to cover the grey layer (the minis looked like wrapped by snakes). This method helps to obtain smooth edges when you air spray the model from above.
