Download Link for Random Placement Diagram

    Thanks.

The instructions on the random placement diagram in the photo do not seem to appear in the download? Do you think you could put them in a post?

Also, when the Eagles come on I assume their random placement is in front of the Entente 2-seater not behind?

    Regards

    Edward

The Random Placement diagram is linked at the bottom of the BRF post Edward - I have emboldened it to make it more obvious - the destructions do not print with it but they are posted on the Download page itself so you can cut and paste from that.

For what it's worth here they are:
Each side rolls 1 die. If both sides roll the same use the head to head set up in the Wings of War rules.
If a side rolls lower, they are the defenders. Place the defender planes in the center of the table.
Roll 2 dice and consult the diagram for location and facing of attackers.
Roll 1 die to deturming the distance from the defenders to set up. 1-3 is two range sticks, 4-6 is three range sticks.

You'd probably want to use the last two lines only in this case. 2d6 will give you the planes location & facing. 1d6 will give the range. Personally I don't think the distances given work well at all.

How do you want us to use this set up Pete ? Instructions on the download page say:
Roll 1 die to determining the distance from the defenders to set up. 1-3 is two range sticks, 4-6 is three range sticks.
Those measurements could put aircraft off the table and if the aircraft have to fly straights until in contact with the enemy (2 rulers) there is a chance they will not make contact at all. Not sure if that was your intent ?!
I would suggest the measurements should be roll D6 1-3 is one range ruler (base to base); 4-6 is 1 1/2 range rulers (peg to base) and that targets are in sight and can be reacted to.

I remember being horribly muddled by this chart last time around. Must do better this time Good luck Edward

Thanks for the mission Pete. Looks like it could take a while Hope to tackle it starting next week.

A question Just suppose a CP scout throws two x ones and then a five. It is facing the wrong way and is not close enough to spot the entente aircraft. It will fly off the table without doing anything as it must fly straight until it makes contact. Question: Do we allow it to go then bring on another scout to replace it using the same rules? I know it is virtually impossible, but the image of all of the cp scouts going the wrong way does appeal to me

Sorry, guys. I should have looked more closely at the possible "off the table" outcomes.

Because this mission is not a dogfight I should have made some modifications.
I also should have taken out the "move straight until contact is made" - that was leftover from before I thought to use the Random Placement.

My intent was that you use the 2-Seater for the placement.
    All you need is this:

Roll 2 dice and consult the diagram for location and facing of attackers.

Place the scouts 2 rulers away -

That will negate the "travel straight until contact is made" because they will be within contact range immediately.

If the initial roll would put your scouts off (or close to off) the mat, for example a roll of 5, roll again.

Hope it's "klar wie Schlamm" < clear as mud > now.

Not sure what we should do here with the random placement and straight movement for the Eagles until contact is made. I don't think this chart works in this situation with the forced straight movement for the Eagles. Positions 2, 4 & 5 will not be able to make contact and fly off the board. 6, 8 & 10 (especially 6) have the possibility of not making contact depending where the 2 seater goes. 3, if starting 3 measures away will miss out and fly off board. 7 9 & 11 (and 12) are the only good positions for making contact.

Would it be better to have the Eagles move freely from the start as they will most likely come in staggered?

Ah, posted mere seconds after your clarification. All is clear.

Even starting at two rulers could put the placement off table if the two seater is one & a half rulers from a maps edge, and making up the distance to get into firing range might prove rather long winded too depending on the comparative speeds of the two seater v scouts employed.
I will try my suggested 1-3 is one range ruler (base to base); 4-6 is 1 1/2 range rulers (peg to base) and see how it goes.

Don't worry Pete, we'll figure it out one way or another. I think Dave has the solution. If not then I'll just have to use the "I" in AI. Hope you don't mind if I use my own mats! Cheers.

PS I still like the idea of all of the CP scouts wandering off table

Can you give me a link to the AI Charts?

  12. #12

They are in the files 'HERE.' There are several different flavors to pick from. Dave has a set of d8 charts. There are d6 2nd Generation and Advanced 2nd Generation by Blackronin, original d6 by the author himself, Richard Bradley 'HERE'. Diceless decks you have to make by Blackronin.

Great! Thanks. What about the WoG Solo System? How well does that work?

I find Richard Bradleys earlier rules using Nose, tail , left and right positions for targeting the aircraft very playable.

I've been using the 2nd Generation Advanced charts and think they work well. I haven't yet printed out Dave's d8 charts but want to check them out.

  16. #16

I'm using Dave's D8 charts and as per advice, anticipating where aircraft will be, rather than using their current position. They make more sense to me. If you are interested, ask Dave and I'm sure he'll be happy to oblige.

  17. #17

    Default

I use Dave's data converted to an Excel file that displays the 3 cards to be used.
Works great - Dave advises the "go where they are heading" and very rarely do I need to be the "I" in AI.

  18. #18

    Thumbs up

Yep! All my OTT games have been played using Dave's D8 charts since he uploaded them & they work a treat!

  19. #19

    Default

The App works but I can't recall which set of AI rules it's based on.
I created my D8 charts because the others didn't use all the card options available eg an Alb D.Va has three sideslips; a Camel has three sharp right turns - no set of AI rules had these options. The D8 charts do and work in the same way as the others. Richard Bradley was kind enough to allow me to use his templates to make the charts.
We've rather hijacked Pete's BRF thread so perhaps we should get back on topic and take this to the Officers mess if it needs further discussion.

    I have a quandary to resolve ...

I am at the end of Turn 9 and the 2-Seater has just been shot down.
There are no Entente planes on the mat.

Do I bring on another 2-Seater and essentially start all over again in Turn 10 ?
Or do I call it a Central Decisive victory ?

  21. #21

    Default

Well, as I read it, according to p18 of your BRF you should bring on another two-seater and an escort Pete.

I was leaning that way, but decided to bring it up in case anyone else runs into the situation.

    Gonna be a long one!

    Heading to the table ...

Well it does say a second may start I suppose !
As I said in the PM - for info of others - Bring on the second two seater to replace the first; Add one escort as there are less than three entente remaining.
Not forgetting your Eagles can be made up to three at this time. Good luck !

  24. #24

Because my one remaining Eagle has 9 damage I am going to bring it up to 3.
Otherwise I would have left it at 2 vs 1.

So now I am bringing on two additional Bulldog scouts.

    Basically, a do-over ....

  25. #25

    Default

I'd keep it going. We're here to play!

I know I messed up the reinforcements but my interpretation (which now I see was wrong) was where it says the Germans can now bring in another scout if they have less than three, I took it as whenever they have less than three, add a scout! I also did this for the Entente. I guess subconsciously I was looking for a larger game.

    Read the rules!!!!!

    By great way, great scenario!

    22 Turns completed.

2 aircraft left on the board.

    Both camera batteries dead.

AAR will follow later this week.

Two seater & Scout v three Eagles is where you should have ended up - would have kept the game shorter !
I guess it's how you interpret the brief, I took "a scout escort" as singular but you could read it as plural to make up to the four aircraft.
You're just a glutton for punishment I think

Following up our previous discussion Pete maybe the cut off for a second two-seater should be based on the number of photo's taken ie if the first is shot down before taking six photos bring on a second ?

My remaining scout was 3 damage away from having to leave the table.
Not much chance for survival methinks.

I think the simplest thing would have been to add a qualifier "As long as the Entente player has scouts remaining at the time the 2-Seater is shot down he may bring on another."

As it played out it was another marathon for my Eagles - I must be a glutton for punishment.
Got a lot of die rolls to do today - hopefully not fulfilling that statement ...

Nice little mission here Pete. Had to switch cards a couple of times to keep the two seater on the board.

Following Mikes game Pete, can you clarify for Uncle whether the 9 card special deck is H deck specific or relative to the aircraft used in mission ?

The deck was to be the actual aircraft used - just those particular moves.
When testing I had an RE.8 and a DH.4 - I just happened to use the H deck to show the moves.

Although most of the pics show the DH.4, picture 15 shows the RE.8 and the K deck.

Finally got to play this one yesterday using one of my RE 8's which was the obvious choice for a Photography Mission.
Photos uploaded & resized. Should do the AAR tomorrow morning. Xrays & other stuff this afternoon.
