Thread: 1 200 2D Top Down IJN Cruiser Noshiro

    Finally:

I finally finished spraying and cutting out the ships of US task force Taffy 3 (6 CVE Escort Carriers and 7 support destroyers) so that now I can get back to finishing this the IJN Cruiser Noshiro

The Noshiro will complete my fictional Ryujo task force (2 Ryujo small Carriers, 5 Kagero Class Destroyers and one Cruiser flagship)

I'm playing with history a bit by creating a series of game scenarios involving a small evasive 1944 Imperial Japanese Navy force that was unusually good at coordinating actions with its Japanese Army counterpart (despite limited aircraft, pilots and carriers).

This IJN Cruiser Noshiro and what will be a US Gato Class submarine (God Willing) are the final touches on those scenarios and maybe I'll be able to get back to actually playing Wings of Glory WWII. (I had underestimated the scope of this hobby project and it has take me over 2 years to create and hopefully complete the ships to be used).

I'm looking forward to Lieutenant Jenkins rejoining the skies over the 1944 Philippine sea.

Here's all I got so far but I'm past the starting line... Too much fun...

    That's coming along beautifully, Chris!

Almost makes me want to break out my 1/700 Noshiro and get building....................sadly, I just don't have the time.

    Keep at it, old chap!

I really enjoy doing the images, but I have to tell you, the fact you all are keeping tabs on the ship yard's progress really makes it fun...

The yard was originally ordered to put her to sea before May's end but I stalled with a series of vacations and family visits... Good distractions as you could imagine...

I have this weekend free of plans so it will be, "Attention all personnel report to to the dock immediately". Dock Chief is calling for double shifts... Grab you socks...!!! Move it move it...!!!

    Thank you again,
    Chris

    Update:

I still need to add the pluming on the stack, and although I wont get to the flight deck this weekend, I have a goal to hit the half way mark just prior to it...

I'm beginning to hallucinate from staring at the image all day, so I'm shutting the yard down for the evening.

    Update into the week:

The ministry of the Emperor's Imperial Navy was very clear when he had demanded the Noshiro rectify her construction delays by Tuesday morning or I would deliver an explanation to the Emperor personally.

Needless to say I was working the men triple shifts to get her back on schedule (at lease half completed by Tuesday morning).

I demanded the men stop working; and ordered them to convene on the unfinished flight deck.

I thanked them for their fatigue, their blistered hands from the relentless use of rivet and welding tools, and their resolve to prove to the empower that he did not make a mistake in trusting our shipyard with Noshiro.

As the staff looked behind me they could see early meal had been prepared with fresh fish and rice; I couldn't wait to join them.

I took a bite of rice and enjoyed the sight of the newly constructed flight shed.

I didn't want to tell them, but the hardest part of Noshiro was behind us now and the main superstructure was completed.

Today, the regular flight deck construction was stopped making room for AA installation efforts.

Noshiro is about to join hybrid status.

She is not a super carrier, but she will do her part.

Seriously though, this sections has been driving me to drink (Scotch, and I would have drank it anyways but you know what I mean right..?)

    Update:

I've reached the point with Noshiro where I need to tackle what launches she will be using for ship to ship and pilot retrieval negotiations.

I started with the 17m motor launch , being the largest, because I wanted to see where she would be stowed aboard Noshiro.

Although Noshiro could bring the 17m aboard ship, Noshiro would have to sacrifice the flight deck or an entire torpedo battery to do so (that doesn't mean Noshiro doesn't need the 17m launch though)
    .
The 12m launch could be brought aboard with nothing more than the loss of 2 x 13mm single AA mounts for each stowed launch (port and starboard); so I'm opting to stick with the stock image (original art below that I'm drawing over as a template) that will leave a canvas covered 12m stowed starboard and an option for any desired launches to also be cut out and stowed as desired.

I wanted to leave the 7m cutter mounted forward port side to better pair Noshiro (visual scale) with the IJN destroyers in the group (the destroyers also mount the 7m cutter port and starboard). Also, this way Noshiro is demonstrating a pair of the many retractable boat rigging arms.

    So...

Short of tweaking the 17m image, it is done. That leaves two motor launch types I hope to add; the 12m and 11m motor launches with an option for the canvas cover removed for both.

    Too much fun

I have a drop dead completion date of Aug 16th because I will be visiting my brother and his spray booth then....

I live in Florida and the humidity from May through October causes the clear cote process on a finished ship image to develope a pink hue shift.

My ink jet printer completes the print perfectly; but the clear cote traps the humidity beneath and the ink starts to emulsify/bleed (trapped under the clear cote with the moisture of the humility).

Normally I wait until the low humidity months of fall/winter so the completed image does not trap the moisture/turn pink but... I don't want to wait until January to get this put to sea.

Ive hurried in the past and produced pink ships as a result. Painfully, Ive had to learn to wait.

My brother's make shift spray booth will allow the project to proceed under the protection of an air conditioned room.

I have a few Dauntless dive bombers gunning for this one and can't wait to kick off into action a series of late Pacific War scenarios.

In the mean time, I SAY NO TO PINK SHIPS (Nothing against the color pink mind you, just not for use on naval units. Operation Petty Coat Excluded of course).... LOL...

I and the Ship Yard appreciate the surprise inspection from both the upper echelons like that (Ken and Rob)...

    Chris

(P.s. I want to get a USN Gato Class Sub into action this fall, and then a series of smaller landing craft. If anyone can think of a destroyer size British ship to add, I would be all ears regarding suggestions).

All motor launches are accounted for and aboard Noshiro.

I changed up and decided to add both launches instead of only going with the 12m launch pictured in the template image.

I think that will do it for updates until next week God willing because I met my goal for this weekend... Woo...!!!

Karl, the contrasting colors keep me from getting the structure and shading mixed up...

I literally got the idea from the Hollywood movie green screening technique...

without the contrast all those shades of gray cause my brain to fail... LOL...

I missed an update last week; I`ve been plinking away at small refinements that wouldn't warrant posting a new image.

One example is adding the circular skirt to each of the main batteries:
