    Default Newbie from Virginia

Just discovered this game. So far, I've only played one-on-one duals with basic rules with my wife and father-in-law, most of which ended with me flying out of the playing area. I'm looking forward to getting more involved, and hope that there might be other players in the Fredericksburg, VA area.

Welcome to the Aerodrome Mark. I think you'll find a good number of pilots down there. Guns of August and the Muster are I think held nearby where Wings gets played. I'm sure soon some locals will get in touch.

Hi, Gary! Right now, I'm trying to figure out if there are any groups meeting within a reasonable drive from me, if not if there are other folks from around Fredericksburg that would like to start a group. You make your way over to Virginia often?

Hi Mark! Welcome to the ‘drome. I'm relatively new to Virginia but started back in the early days with Wings of War before it became Wings of Glory. I’m down near Hampton so it’s a bit of a drive - I know there are some folks up your way so keep an ear cocked for them to pipe up. Like Teaticket mentioned there are some large events that draw us together from time to time. Look forward to crossing your path at some point.

Things are a little slow on here right now, I'm sure things will pick up after the 1ST of January. Use the time to check out the files section for interesting information.

Careful Andrez, we've just had four Geezers nicked in Sheffield and Chesterfield in the UK who, it seems, might have had the same idea.

I wonder if any gamers have ever been mistakenly raided or arrested due to a misunderstanding of pre game briefings. Can you imagine a briefing for example to team mates on a bombing scenerio of Buckingham Palace. I bet the Super Squads would be all over that one and think Gotha was a clever code name.

Thanks, Quinn! How are things at the confluence of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers? Do you know of any organized WWI games in the area?

  35. #35

    Default

To the best of my knowledge there's no organized games in my immediate area , most of my games are single player or death matches between my brother and I. The nearest organized game club/ convention is the Hampton roads gamers based in Williamsburg at the Williamsburg Muster/Guns of August convention held every Feb. A couple of the pilots from here (including your truly) go and play a some WWI and WWII games. It pretty big and you can find a plethora of opponents and planes to fight with. My geography sucks so I don't know how far away from Williamsburg you are but if you are close enough I would give it a go. The next con is Feb 15-18.

Guns of August in February. How...ironic? Hopefully some info on location, registration, etc will be posted. I am interested. I've gone and bought several planes and am discovering that keeping them in their original packaging has drawbacks as far a space and time to assemble is concerned. I'm now looking for anything people may come up with for safe and compact storage. I imagine I'm not the first to think this would be a good idea and hope to see what others are doing at the con. Also hope to shoot down someone other than my wife.

Hey Mark, here's the link to the convention's website. http://hamptonroadsgamers.org/. It should have all of the info you need for it on there. Happy flying!

Just saw this and welcome to the group Mark. There are two events by the Hampton Roads group. As you mentioned once there is the Williamsburg Muster in Feb. The other, that was also mentioned, is the Guns of August by the same group. Rich S. runs WWII games but uses 1/144 planes rather then WoG planes. I have played many of his game and we have a great time. Hope to see you there in Feb.

Thanks, Bob. Quinn sent me a link to the Hampton Roads website. I didn't see much there with respect to WoG. But if we can make it down that way, I'd like to check it out.

I've been looking at the Campaign Discussions forum and discovered the OTTBE scenarios. I had a lot of questions as I looked over the briefs and AARs, and was able to resolve a lot of them by going over the files, but there were three areas that left me stumped. It is possible that they are answered in the FAQs, but there were too many pages for me to pour over. Anyway, the first is easy. OTT = Over the Trenches. But what does the BE stand for? The second: I figured out the solo rules, but can they be applied while doing a bombing (or airdrop) run? Finally, the rules for the Butcher's Tab confused me. I don't understand the shorthand. I've cut and pasted a sample.

Ltn Konrad Strünklenberg: SD-FLM-ET 0 kills
    Rolled: 5 -2FLM = 3 Injured - Skip 1D6 Scenarios. Rolled 3.
    E&E: Rolled 6 -1FLM -1WIC -1BEL = 3 Captured and escaped! - Skip 1D3 Scenarios. Rolled 4 = Skip 2. Total Skip 3 (RRW)

    Could someone translate?

    I appreciate your patience!

    Yes, with a little tweaking.

Ltn Strünklenberg had a bit of a bad day...

Shot Down (SD) in Flames (FLM) over Enemy Territory (ET) without tallying a victory.
Survival roll was a 5, then modified for the flames (-2) which resulted in a 3. That result = "Injured for 1D6 Scenarios."
His Escape & Evasion (E&E) roll was a 6, modified by -1 (on fire) -1 (wounded) -1 (behind enemy lines), resulting in a result of 3 = captured, but escaped! This resulted in his missing a number of additional scenarios, bringing the total to 3.

In other words, Ltn Strünklenberg was shot down in flames over enemy territory. Though wounded and captured, he managed to escape his captors and return to his own lines. His wounds will keep him grounded for the next 3 scenarios.

This Butcher's Bill results set is explained in detail in the OTT rules. (as well as a lot of other things, not necessarily just for OTT)

As Chris said, Ltn Strünklenberg had a tough flight, but at least he survived and will fly another day.

    Mark,
Rich and John run Wings games. Rich runs them (WWII) in 1/144 and John S does WWI. Rich is running a game The Soccer War which was the last time piston engine planes met in combat. So you will see P-51's vs Corsairs.
