Thread: Tripods UK - Yay or Nay ?

Default Tripods UK - Yay or Nay ?

Thought I'd instigate a straw poll just to see how many chaps in the UK are buying into the Tripods & Triplanes Kickstarter.
Personally it's not my thing but I'd happily 'give it a go' if it was put out as an option at a show & help the punters fly the planes - I'm just wondering now whether other 'showmen' amongst our ranks have bought in; will we see it at the forum tables and if so where's that likely to be ?
So indulge me if you please - a simple Yay or Nay will suffice to provide a broad stroke picture, if you have more to give then that's welcome too but this is about getting a feel for where & how this will feature than why's and why not's.
Who knows, it may also ID GM's for the new game.

I've signed up, but only for the planes. A friend of mine in to Sci Fi is buying all the other stuff off of me.

I am in, mainly because my position means I have to be abreast of all developments and be able to speak with some knowledge about what the models and playing are like. I will only initially be getting the Invasion set, and one of each Tripod type plus Ball's aircraft.

    Nay

(actually "yay" - but at "pledge without reward" plus extra to get Ball's plane, having been advised thats OK)

Yes albeit with reservations. I'm in at the Invasion level as I reckon I'll get some of my friends - most not very historical gaming minded - involved. For me the N.16 and to a lesser extent the Camel are the more interesting aspects.

Not sure - I think I need to see the finished models etc before committing - not sure my pocket money will allow me to branch out into something new...

I was thinking along the same lines Rob but balked at the layout of a ton or more for a game that most of my contemporaries may not be interested in playing for the sake of promoting an Ares product I'm not really into myself. Even if it does get people to the table, it doesn't follow they will buy in to it, nor that they will get into the historical game. I'm sure we've all met punters who only play WoG at the shows !
Hoping to see some more responses from our GM's to get a real feel for this but Nay seems to hold sway at the moment.

I was hiding in the cracks and remaining quiet regarding this release,

The trouble is reconciling that WWI aircraft/technology would be able to crack tripods open; and perhaps this should be more of a WWII venue.

With regret, I am a Nay

I’m definitely wanting to get this, but have an aversion to kickstarters, so may well wait until it hits retail before buying. That way I get to support a local retailer too.

As I suspect some of you have gathered, I don’t take my gaming too seriously, so don’t get caught up on the historical stuff and see this a great way to get people not interested in just planes to give it a go. But then I also suspect I am in a minority in this respect.

The choice of WWI planes makes sense to me as it is roughly the period when most of the source material is set. I’m sure, if there is no official support, someone will hack the rules to bring the invasion to WWII.

I'm in for the Invasion set, and if we want to Demo it at a show, I'm up for that as well.
As those who have met me will testify I am an entirely serious and history driven (wibble with a pencil in each nostril) sort of chap (baaaa) and have no idea why the other chaps wouldn't want to join in!

Chris, we've all seen the news reel from the fifties, Korean era Americans couldnt crack the darned things, so you'll need to go Vietnam on the blighters!

You're not alone Chris but you are the other side of the pond so won't affect this straw poll.

That's good to know Neil - maybe we can get you to GM a table end at Colours ?

I have to admit that is a solid argument Ribbit... I will see your Korean War and raise you Gulf War... Could you imaging Wings of Glory F-16s... I will be quiet now because I could not afford to start purchasing Jet aircraft also... I would make it happen though.

Truthfully, I will purchase at lease 1 or 2 of the tripods because they are Wings of Glory.

The resounding argument about aircraft offerings from Ares is actually to Ares credit. There product is so superior that it makes it painful to purchase non Wings of Glory miniatures. Props to you Ares... Props...

P.s. I am broke because of the sails of glory offerings... Labor of love if I may... Good Job (again) Ares...

Anymore for anymore ? Most of the UK chaps viewing this have commented.
Currently looks like the Midlands will see some forum Tripod coverage by JB & FOK with support from David in the East perhaps. Nothing mentioned from up north and very little presence 'dahn sarf' or points westward - though a possible showing at Colours by Neil; maybe Edward somewhere too ?
I wonder how many independents will run it at the shows ? If we feel a need for it we might be able to get another table just for Tripods at Beachhead 2019 !

Well, if it has not been delayed & we get a big table again, perhaps we can split the gaming area like we did last time and you and Neil can demo tripods for us.

Looking at the KS pages there are currently 107 backers in the UK, 22 of whom are in London, the top city for backers; so I think there's a good chance that Tripods will appear on non forum tables at the shows and possibly double the WoG presence at them.

Well I’ve capitulated and backed the KS at Second Invasion level. Even if all it gets is some outings at my club I’ll be happy.

Dave - assuming Ares hit their shipping targets should definitely have loads of goodies to bring to Colours. Splitting the table like this year might be a great way to do things.

I have been holding back so far, since the poll was addressed to UK PLAYERS, but seeing grumpybear from colonies voting, I freed myself to say YES. I am definitely in with the Second Invasion +, for:
    a) surely, my Flight will love that twist,
    b) I love all things Martians,
    c) the minis look superfine,
    d) ARES will expand the WoG possibilities,
    e) LvR will have a chance to fly as Ball's wingman which shall be great sport.

It is a UK member addressed thread and it's not a vote for or against, it's a straw poll to gauge whether we will see it at our (forum) tables at UK shows. It looks like there will be activity in the Midlands but not much anywhere else as the most of the usual GM's & supporters are not buying into Tripods.
Reasons why people are buying in or not are irrelevant as are comments from those not attending public shows in the UK.

That's probably a cheaper option than getting it from a retailer after the KS Neil. We'll have to liaise with Chris (Boney10) about the table set up as he's GM usually - but as they gave us a big table last year we should be able to get the same again I'd have thought. I'm sure we can fix something up & Edward might make it so you will have an assistant running it.
I'll bring along my Spad XII if we do and maybe have a cannon fitted to my AFB-1 just to give them a run out in support !

Hello all ......looks a bit of Fun Yay, I'm relatively new to WoG and I'm a gamer rather than a purist so though I understand how it isn't everyone'a cup of tea I'll go for it, nice cheap option for picking up more aircraft as well and if I end up nit liking it I'll sell the Martian bits and keep the planes.

That's a spot on entry level to both games Mark and welcome to the 'drome, see if you can make it along to some of the shows for some flight training before they land !
