Default December Workbench of Delights 2017

Is any one out there building? It is winter, well not here, but most places you should have your house elves pouring cocoa and watching the builder elves do their thing . . . here's a bit of nostalgia to start the month off:

The AEG GII, no balance on the ailerons , open and exposed engines, fun in 1/144" scale, imagine someone at Shapeways makes them! Triple rudders though, kinda cool . . .

This just came in from Dave at AIM. I doubt I'll get it all done in December but will start the ones I'll need for Cold Wars. Bob will be able to identify these.

I can attest to the beauty of this MoRoTas Gothas! You do some amazing work Dave. You are an inspiration to us all! Any chance we will get to see that Rumpler G.III any time soon?

And do any of you fine folks have some suggestions for workbench tools I should acquire? Any you simply can’t live without? I asked in a separate post but no one has responded.

    Some order there Peter. I-16's (4)/Nate's (5)/Ann's (3)/Sally's (2)/ Lilly's (2). I think a Dauntless or 3 in front of the I-16's. I just received 3 more I-16's (6) and 2 Nate's (6) along with 2 SB2's (4). Also for more of my Italian AF 2 more MC200's (6) and 4 MC 202's. And for something different 3 OHKA's. I almost forgot 3 more Buffalo's (6) for a Malaysian battle.

Looks like Cold Wars will be an interesting set of games.

Well painted up 15 models and now just have to put the decals on them which I hope to get done this weekend. 8 are additions to planes I already have done.

Right on Bob. The two in front of the I-16s are Oscars. That will bring me up to 12 so I can have 3 flights of 4 different Senati.

After this, since I'll have the Japanese, I plan to get on to planes for a Java campaign, British, US and Dutch. We'll get your Buffalos on the table!

Here is the progress on my attempt at a game mat. I’m going for the bas-relief format to give the impression of a 3-D surface. Hopefully I can get it painted up before January’s bench post comes along!

Did you upload 4 images but only add 2 to the thread Nick ? The 2 in blue are those not added/used usually - if you go into the image manager you can delete the ones you don't want.

Nice project by the way that's showing a lot of potential & many hours of work !

Just landed from Shapeways, a few new Avengers, have not had the pleasure of checking these out, nice to compare with the AIM resin versions. The new ones are quite sharp and a bit more appealing to me than the AIM brothers, better dihedral and nose contours, but weaker wing airfoil sections, a bit of geometric stepping from the design, not the printing . . . but then without my glasses, quite cool!

I have been dabbling in some more alternate science this past week and have finished painting Cthulhu to my satisfaction - he is awaiting a piece of clear plexi to mount for a base (it will be the size of the Staaken/H-P bomber base) - I have a piece of clouded plexi that I was planning on using, but if I can find the clear plexi at a good price, I'll use that...

Below you can see the scenario components laid out. There are 15 'pilot sanity cards' passed out randomly (one to each pilot) at the beginning of the game - these affect a pilot's abilities for the entire game - they are upper left. There are 40 'madness' cards, drawn when a pilot sees Cthulhu's eyes when he fires at the beast - these affect a pilot's movement for the next three maneuver cards - they are upper right. The dice and percentage card at the bottom are used to determine whether a pilot sees Cthulhu's eyes, based on where he is firing from in relation to the monster.

Here is the beginnings of a counter I plan to use for each pilot to keep track of when his 'madness' cards began to influence his movement...

All in all, it's proving to be a fun diversion from the historical - the two times we've play-tested so far have been quite fun. I am sure we'll run through several more games in the next couple of months to make sure the bugs are worked out before Origins. I am also working on a large coastal mat on which to play the scenario - it will serve well for historical games along the Channel Coast, too - one of my favorite areas of the WWI conflict.

    All the best,
    Matt

Great work on the Cthulhu scenario! Your coastal approach could be easily adapted to a Beast From 20000 Fathoms scenario as well. Hmmmmm.......

Yeah...that does sort of make things interesting, Chris

I figure on giving him 100 damage points to start out with, and when those are used up, he disappears for 3 maneuver cards and then reappears at a random point again, with 50 points. This will repeat until he's 'halved' to 'death', at which point he'll lose interest with puny mortals and disappear. Victory points will be determined by, among other things, how many damage points a pilot does to Cthulhu. It has worked pretty well so far in play-testing...

    All the best,
    Matt

Ah, maybe I'm just reading too much WH fiction lately
BTW: though no really on the workbench, but on the kitchen counter, I'm doing my holiday baking today and last weekend. I take cookies in for my drivers I
(I do receiving at a grocery store), and decided to expand with some quick breads for my favored co-workers (Oh, right, we're "Team Members" now ).
I know a number of my fellows here have sampled the wares. Sadly, no care packages this year.

Thanks Bob......I do commission work for a few customers and consider myself "above average" wargaming standard (only super egos post them selves as Pro Painters).
When things get slow I do a Flames of War army or Bolt Action Platoon and toss em on E-bay fishing for new customers. AAANNNDDD....on rare moments I even do something for myself.
