Default BoB: Alternate Acft. Loadout Possibilities

Reading up on the US 5th AF in the Pacific, and wonder what the German might have accomplished against the RAF in Britain if they'd been able to deploy versions of what 5th AF had -- "gunsnout" Do-17s, and later Ju-88s; "parafrags" instead of the "butterfly bombs" with their tendency to blow up in the racks. Given how close the Germans came to actually forcing the RAF out of the skies of SE Britain....

Simply giving the Messerschmitt Bf-109E's drop tanks would have made a big difference.

Not quite -- a drop tank would slow them down and make them less maneuverable; better internal tankage, OTOH....

That is not a problem whilst flying over France and escorting the bombers part of the way across the Channel. Once the R.A.F. appeared, they could drop their extra tanks, become fully manoeuverable again and have their full internal tankage of fuel.

True -- does seem a bit inefficient, given how close to England most of the fighter bases were.

An extra 15-30 minutes in the combat area would have made a big difference.
