Thread: De Havilland Museum and the RAF museum Hendon, London

Default De Havilland Museum and the RAF museum Hendon, London

Its probably all been done a few times before, but never-the-less, I thought I would share a few pics taken this last weekend. Both museums are really worth visiting. The Guys at the De Havilland museum were especially helpful and I spent some time chatting to one of them about the Mosquito. Very interesting information from my point of view as my knowledge of WWII aircraft is zilch. Lots of voluntary rennovation work going on and not just to the Mosquitos.

Hendon, as no doubt many of you already know, is awesome. From a personal point of view I was interested primarily in the WWI hanger and I was not disappointed A great display. I have posted a small selection of the 250 odd pics taken and I hope, for those of you who may not have visited yet, or have not done so for some time, that they will give a taster of what you can expect for your money. DH cost me £8.00 as a "senior" (£10.00 for the younger folk) and the Hendon visit was free, with a £3.00 per three hour visit, for the car parking, of which there was plenty.
    Cheers
    Mike

Happy to add more info or more pics if anyone wants me to. Sorry about the lighting in some of the photos. I was using my mobile and the lighting in the hangars was difficult for me to deal with properly.
    Cheers

    Thanks for the photos, Mike!

I haven't been to Hendon for many years; not since I was a teenager.
It's only a dozen miles from home! I really much try harder..................

I have same feelings from Hendon as you, Mike: great museum, close to Underground station, and superb WWI hangar. I was not suprised about WWII and modern one, but WWI is definitely the best and has a magic atmosphere of old times

I could have spent much longer there, just to soak up that atmosphere. Took a few short video sequences too, but I'm not sure if they are too long to post. I'll give one a try in a bit.

Awhile ago the WW1 display at Hendon was excellent.
A big hanger crammed full of aircraft and all of them displayed on the ground.
Then they spent a fortune on doing it up - with computer graphics and planes like the Fe2 suspended high up from the ceiling.
    Oh well!

I was never lucky enough to see that. However, I did enjoy the current display and there appear to be signs of development going on. So perhaps all those other WWI aircraft you saw will eventually re-appear.

Liked those pics especially the Mosquitos. I wonder if they will be WoG models one day. 3 variants, fighter, bomber and recon. Versatile plane.

On the positive side the displays are great.
One of my regrets is the loss of the Vickers Vimy Replica built to celebrate to 50th anniversary of Alcock and Brown’s 1919 transatlantic flight.

Your pictures are great and the museum is still well worth visiting.

Tried and failed I'm afraid. But I'll try a different approach when I have a bit more time.

Thanks for that link Nicola. I wasn't aware of that! You never know, one day perhaps!!!

Here's hoping! It's a shame the names of Alcock and Brown are all but forgotten.

On a different topic, did you have time to see the Sunderland Flying Boat?
It is well worth a look.

    Thanks for the pics, Mike.
I was lucky to visit the Museum several years ago with my father, an aviation enthusiast as well.
    Great exhibition.
Mossie should be turned into an Ares mini as soon as possible, but for unknown reason we will get a Me 410 first. Well, we could complain nights and days...

The reason is balance or "bring at least one German per serie" I guess. Maybe we'll be surprised, who knows?

Yes! And I can list at least 3-4 most popular German planes that we've been missing since ARES took over the NEXUS line! 410 is at the very bottom of a list of 20!

Well, it was to balance off the P-38, two engines vs two engines. Still a decision of questionable logic.

Well, I have also a very long list of WWII aicrafts that I want to have in my collection one day. And a little shorter list of aircrafts that I do not care and have them in my briefcase from "complete all types" reason (Said someone Italy and Japan?). Still hoping for US saturation and turning to Eastern Front, at least two or three more minis. And I do not mention mid-war era...

    This was exactly my idea.

Great photos. Some of those planes I have seen but there are some I not seen at all. I have been getting planes from Dave (AIM) lately so my Italians and Japanese aircraft have expanded alot.
I also sent an email to Dave asking if he thought about do a model of the Mosquito. He said he has a mold but not up to his standards. I hope that may have been a hint for him to work on it so we can get a nice new plane into our inventories.
