Thread: Super mats or dioramas of our dreams?

Default Super mats or dioramas of our dreams?

I was quite taken by the amazing modeling of the battlefields and narratives in the war museums in the NZ. This is the battle story tool at the Te Papa museum in Wellington, done by Peter Jackson's crew - very impressive! Makes me wonder . . .

The battle of Gallipoli was being illustrated . . . the upper graphic does the usual explaining, while sitting below was a topographical model with the site in relief. As the narrative progressed, overhead projectors imaged the terrain details, trees etc. whilst a video was projected of troop movements and engagements - all very awesome! Makes me wonder . . .

Then there were the giant terrain models . . . 1 meter x 3 meters! outstanding detail!

Literally thousands of miniatures of the battle of Gallipoli all to scale and super detailed, an army of elves from across the country helped put this together!

    Wow; that's incredible!
The military museum in Leeds, UK, has a pair of nice dioramas. Let me see if I have good pics of them.

What amazing models! They give you a real appreciation of how difficult the terrain was.

Museum dioramas always make me fantasize what great gaming tables they would make! Beautiful.

David, I do not think you have been to Australia yet.
Our War Museum in Canberra has a large number of Dioramas both WW1 & WW2 & a great interactive map of Gallipoli based on actual Aerial photos taken during the Campaign.
Unfortunately I do not have photos.

    @Barry and the merry gang:
I have just taken a look at the Museum website and must confess the photo galery (pics with individual, detailed descriptions!) they have there is truly amazing.

Something went wrong with the upload below, never mind.

    G'day Andy!
Keith said the site was going to have upgrades made which might account for the problem.

Glad you enjoyed the diorama's David.

I'm incredibly lucky in that one of my best friends was one of the elves...
As a result, I have a small (4 figure) diorama done by him from some of
    the 'left-over' minis.

I was gobsmacked by his generosity with the gift.

    Very nice,

Always wanted to do a 3D terrain map with a clear sheet braced over it. You could get the look but also have a flat surface to play on. Then when you got shot down just place the plane with cotton balls under the clear sheet on the map proper.

The Dardenellles was called Churchill's Folly in some books. Excellent photos and craftsmanship.

He did seem to have this obsession with the Med as the way to get to the heart of the enemy. Didn't he look at a topo map? Turkey, Greece, Italy.....MOUNTAINS! And few roads.

Churchill's overriding priority was to protect the Empire, particularly the sea route to India.
Thus the high priority given to the Mediterranean.

True enough; but in WW1, the only real threat to the canal was a Turkish land attack, which the Gallipoli Campaign diverted resources that could be used to defend against it. Granted, if it had succeeded in taking Istanbul, that would have eliminated the threat. But given the terrain and the power of the defense (as already shown on the Western Front), a quick strike was most unlikely to succeed.
In WW2, by '43, most traffic to India was around Africa; moreover, the most vital supply line was from North America and South America. His insistence that Italy was the "soft underbelly" of Fascist Europe was a delusion.

I would go in an instant, two adorable grand kids there with my 2 son's and daughter in law. But alas the elves will be needing to sell a hanger full of stuff to fund it.
