Note the 2 different type helmets the crew is wearing.
Thanks for those great pics Bob!
Thank you for posting the link to those great photographs, Bob!
Really nice colorized photos Bob, thanks.
Nice pics, thanks Bob.

yes, this pic is a good illustration of how it takes time for new material to work its way through the supply chain. the earlier helmets are either ww1 vintage m1917 or 1930s m1917a1s whilst the others are the ubiquitous m1. the m1 was adopted in june of 1941 prior to the us involvement in ww2, but clearly, not all crew aboard the hornet had received them by 1942.
this pic is also a good illustration why im not particularly a fan of colorized images. the usn had a color code system of cloth helmets for deck crews on aircraft carriers. it is likely that this color coding was carried over to their helmets as well as navy lids appear in a dizzying aray of colors from grey, to yellow, to red etc.
stil quite interesting pics though. thanks for sharing!!!
my favorite would have to be the "woody" m4 sherman "killer" with the souvenir jap tank (japanese armor; the best ww1 tanks of ww2) on the rear deck lol!!!
Colorized historic photos are tricky; on one hand, they make the subject matter more relatable to the modern eye, but they cause issues with fact. like the internet and social media
Now, I know soldiers are big souvenir hunters, but why would you bring back a tankette? Armor division deerhunter?

I know these days they wear different color shirt to designate what their job is on deck. Not sure if they did that in WWII. I am sure there are Navy guys here that can clear this up.
Interesting pics, Bob. I will have to revisit when I get home in a week or so.
iPhone doesn't do them justice.
