    Default December 7th

    Members of the Mess,

Allow me to stray away from the usual frivolity for a moment and ask that you join me in raising a glass in commemoration of this day, December 7th. A toast to those that served, fought and gave their all on that history-changing day in 1941.

    Remember Pearl Harbor.

To our brave American allies, on behalf of the British squadrons, we will raise our glasses in the Mess tonight.

In my lifetime there have been two major moments that I would consider lifechanging. One is when I stood in front of (and then on the other side of) the Berlin Wall in the 1980's...

The second is standing at the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. I was barely a teen, but I remember it like it was yesterday... and always will.

My glass is held high. To the men and women that fought and died that day 60 years ago, and to all those that did so before and after as well...

A terrible day that led to the fall of European fascism.

    Default Pearl Harbor Day

    Here Here

I heard on the news today that there are only about 3,000 Pearl Harbor survivors left alive today and the number is dwindling fast. This puts all of them close to 90 years old.

Let's never forget and make sure we teach it to following generations.

It was a beautiful day here today. It was a very emotional day for all of us out here. I was able to take a small boat out today and do a reenlistment floating just a few yards from the Arizona memorial, then went around Ford Island to visit the Utah. Could not have been a better day.

God bless to all our fallen.

Anav that does sound like a great day, I spent 3 years in Hono back in the early 90s when I was in the Coast Guard.. a trip to the Arizona was ... humbling.. sad.. and ... and it made me proud to be an American serving this great country... but we must remember we all.. our allies an us.. would not be where we are now without those days of alliance.. though no grudge be held to our past enemies, and now friends.. brotherhood and friendship endure..

We have a family friend that was there that day. I stopped over after our scout meeting and told him thanks for serving there at a terrible time in our in our history. But, it never seem to be enough for what they lived through.

Kipling had the right of it:-

    Big Steamers

"OH, where are you going to, all you Big Steamers,
With England's own coal, up and down the salt seas? "
"We are going to fetch you your bread and your butter,
Your beef, pork, and mutton, eggs, apples, and cheese."
"And where will you fetch it from, all you Big Steamers,
And where shall I write you when you are away? "
"We fetch it from Melbourne, Quebec, and Vancouver.
Address us at Hobart, Hong-kong, and Bombay."

"But if anything happened to all you Big Steamers,
And suppose you were wrecked up and down the salt sea?"
"Why, you'd have no coffee or bacon for breakfast,
And you'd have no muffins or toast for your tea."

"Then I'll pray for fine weather for all you Big Steamers
For little blue billows and breezes so soft."
"Oh, billows and breezes don't bother Big Steamers:
We're iron below and steel-rigging aloft."

"Then I'll build a new lighthouse for all you Big Steamers,
With plenty wise pilots to pilot you through."
"Oh, the Channel's as bright as a ball-room already,
And pilots are thicker than pilchards at Looe."

"Then what can I do for you, all you Big Steamers,
Oh, what can I do for your comfort and good?"
"Send out your big warships to watch your big waters,
That no one may stop us from bringing you food."

For the bread that you eat and the biscuits you nibble,
The sweets that you suck and the joints that you carve,
They are brought to you daily by All Us Big Steamers
And if any one hinders our coming you'll starve!"
