Thread: Valom kits

    Default Valom kits

Just wondering if anyone has any quick and easy ideas for dealing with especially the photo etched bits of valom kits ? Having bought one of the double dogfight (ie 4 planes) fokker e111 and niewport 11 kits, I have built the two e111s - gluing without locator lugs and holes was a bit of a shock for one brought up on airfix but went ok however the undercart was a photoetched pain and the central bracing struts over the mg broke as I tried to cut them off the etch so ended up replacing with plastic rod.

However, that said, they are nice models and at a tenner for 4 seem very good deal so I wondered if anyone else had made them and had any helpful tips or advice please ?

I always use paper clips to strut and add an undercart to my models.

I have built 4 Fokker D.VIIs, and have had absolutely no problems at all.

Many other Valoms are on my to-do list, but I have no time at all to spare.

The real problem I had was, as I say, the photoetched parts - the e111 has that triangle shaped frame undercart and trying to solder tiny bits to other tiny bits and then get said tiny bits to glue onto the plastic body in anything vaguely like the right place made for a lot of blue air rather than blue skies ! In the end, when it came to the wheels, I made an axle of plastic rod and glued the wheels to that (using poly cement) then glued that to the photoetch to give a bit more surface for the superglue to fix.
Like I said, its a shame as they are nice and inexpensive kits but the undercart especially is doing for me; I will see how the Neiwports go together and maybe think about making a plastic undercart for any further purchases otherwise I guess shapeways will be getting yet more trade !

I always thought it would have been nice if they'd included plastic struts as well as the etched brass as options.

With the etched bits I found applying a blob of superglue to a toothpick and then using that to glue the pieces together worked though not without a lot of cursing.

I have done the Fokker E.III, Nieuport 11, Albatros D.Va, and RAF SE5a. The best way I have found is to use thick superglue with accelerator and tweezers. Even then the brass bits are a pain but the models look great when they are done.

How do you do that Tim? I've had all sorts of problems with my first D.VII so much so that I still haven't got around to finishing the second one.

The Se5 looks really good, I may have to revisit Valom's kits

Your models look great - I must admit that I gave up with a lot of the etched parts and have used plasti-card strips and the niewports top wing gun came as two etched halves so I have ordered some lewis guns from shapeways - very jealous of your results though !

Once I get the current crop of WGS and WGF out of the road I might revisit Valom. But I definitely need practice on how not to glue etched parts to ones fingers.

Certainly would have helped Sunderland today mate, like Napoleon but in reverse battle won/battle lost. Fancy throwing away a 2 goal lead.
