The Knoxville Flight gathered last night at Hobby Town in Farragut. The British had received intelligence reports that the Germans were planning to launch a massive assault. A flight of three assorted British single seaters were dispatched to attack a near by railhead where troop trains had been observed. The railyard was heavily defended by several machine gun positions. Taking heavy fire the valiant airmen were able to destroy two train engines, block the rail lines and prevent any additional forces from reaching the front. In this action one British fighter was lost.
Returning to base the pilots reported seeing German tanks and armored cars moving through no mans land. The British quickly launched a flight of three two seaters to bomb the armored column. Unfortunately for the Germans both of their tanks quickly broke down. The plucky pilots, while taking heavy damage from the armored cars, kept punching away at the armored force. Bombs completely destroyed both tanks and all three amored cars. As the battle was winding down a sole German Fokker DVII arrived over the battle field. It was quickly engaged and managed to shoot down one of the British planes, but it was also shot down in the same engagement. The remaining British pilots limped home with sadness in their hearts over losing their wingmate but with a sense of satisfaction knowing that they had stopped the German offensive in its tracks.
