Thread: What's on your workbench----AUG

Well I have some AIM planes and an idea I will start tomorrow. AIM planes are 3 TBM's/3 ANN's and 4 Corsairs and just made another order for a few more planes. 4 MACCHI 200's/2 Blenheims and 2 CantZ's twin tails so should be busy for the next few weeks.

  2. #2

    Default

I have 4 Oscars I've started for Fall In. I'll probably get a few more.

  3. #3

I'm working on a Gotha repaint, should be done soon.

  4. #4

I'm currently repainting 4 Aeres Bf110's. The brown ones which look terrible so converting them to a two colour pattern to match the Slumph one (the one with the drop tanks which incidentally I have removed).

Two Bessoneau hangars for me, and possibly a Pfalz D.III (haven't decided on a color scheme yet).

  7. #7

All my leftovers from last month!

Currently 4 BE2cs (almost finished, I swear!), a "Blue Max" Stachel Pfalz D.III and six Albatros D.IIIs which slipped unplanned to the front of the queue!

Plus my Pfalz E.II, which I'm going to need some help with (that means you, miscmini!)
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

Peter looks like the B-24 will be in a buzzsaw of Oscars. I like the idea of A night at the Oscars.

Went to Hobby Lobby today to get the few things I wanted for a project I am working on. Its a dangerous place to go and just walk around. I can see how Clipper gets his inspiration for the things he does. $35 later I picked up the 2 things I needed for the project then something else for the project, then something else for another thing and then some nice barrels for another game. I should have some pictures of what I am working on by this weekend.

Too bad I didn't think of that sooner. I had to submit games for Fall In last week. It's will be 'B-24s over Rabaul'. Saturday 8 pm.

    I hardly think a flight of fighters less well-armed than a single P-47 constitutes a "buzzsaw".... :)

Well Chris looking at my Osprey book on Dec 1, 1943 6 B-24's were lost on one mission and 2 Oscars. Maybe not a Buzzsaw but not that good either.

4 games in total. WWI 1, where there is a British submarine having technical troubles and can't dive so the Huns are out to try to sink it. 2, a night bombing mission, Gothas over London.
WW2, Rabaul you already know of, 2nd, Stukas over the channel attacking a convoy escorted by Me 109s and intercepted by Spits and Canes.

I can't remember the order but 1 game is Friday night, other three are Saturday. I'll dig out and post my schedule when we are a bit closer.

My workbench looks very similar to how it did in June! Only change is a Bandai 1:12 scale stormtrooper added to the to build list. Don't know what I'll use it for but it looks a neat kit. I've ordered a 1:12 deck chair for him to sit in once built.

Not planes, in one case, but aircraft related. I am assisting the Comox Air Force Museum with their Heritage Stones. Weathering is beating up the paint in the engraving, and I am helping with the refurbishment.

Painting the serifs in these letters is tricky, and the stone is very porous, so you can't just blob it on, and try to clean up the overage afterwards. The large block letters at the bottom are 15mm (1/2 inch) in height. I'm using a 10/0 and 5/0 brush for this work.

And for real fun, I'm helping a fellow gamer with his "Tanks" models, so we can demo the game. He was just looking for base colours, but I got bored.

We had a few tanks done in base grey, and I went looking for a camo pattern that would go with that. I found this reference:

(Source: World War 2 German Camouflage and Tactical Markings Part I)

I went with the top row, second from the left, as it was obviously a grey base colour. And this was what I did to the Tiger to dress it up:

The tank isn't finished, at least as far as I'm concerned. I want a black wash, and some weathering. However, my buddy is pretty happy with the tank as it is. We'll see if I can get my hands on it again with my washes and dry brushes.

PS: "Tanks" scale is 15mm or 1/100 scale.

The Bessonneau hangars are done and ready for service!
Better late than never, since they were on my to-do list for 3 years... The frames are WSF from Reduced Aircraft Factory: beautiful, very light but also quite easily breakable.

I used very thin washi paper for the canvas covering, and on my first try forgot to take into account how it would stretch or shrink during painting and drying... It's the one on the right in the pictures, and the roof covering got too broad.
I adjusted my measurements on the second (left) one and folded its edges to get a kind of hem, and I think it looks better.
They received three coatings of diluted white glue mixed with pale sand paint. When this was dry, I airbrushed the ribs in pale cream to make them stand out a little more.
Then I cut out the covering from the windows with an X-acto knife, sprayed on a thin coat of matt varnish, and voila!

    Here they are:

Fantastic job on the hangars! Those came out very nicely. The washi paper looks very realistic and it's got that nice non-uniform look.

Unfortunately Shapeways changed their pricing model a few years ago and the hollow hangar frames are actually now more expensive than solid-printed frames! "Wait, how could that be?", you ask? This frame used to be pretty inexpensive, since they only charged for the weight of the plastic used in the model. But in late 2014 their pricing model changed, and Shapeways now charges almost as much for empty space space between the rafters and supports as it does for solid plastic:

This, on the other hand, is just a hollow shell with no rafters or anything, so it comes in at 2/3 the price of the frame (under the new pricing model). In theory that is because Shapeways can fit more other prints into the space around the "solid print" instead of reserving room for rafters and the like. That's why a lot of "large hollow" models disappeared when they changed their pricing.

Yes I may get the extensions they do in the future to make it longer. Although using Bolt Action rules don't want to make it too long. The Pegasus Bridge model they do is a tad longer than the range of a rifle! (In the rules that is).
