    Default Great Movie!

If you haven't yet seen "Dunkirk" I strongly suggest you give it a look!

Yes just seen it, the best war film I've seen in a long long time very well made.

If you go to see it, there's an important point to know. The movie has three different stories to tell - that of an infantryman, a civilian boat captain, and a Spitfire pilot. The scenes with the infantryman cover a week, the scenes of the boat captain cover a day, and the Spitfire pilot an hour. The movie jumps from viewpoint to viewpoint, so things will not be shown in strict chronological order. This sounds confusing, but in the movie it works well. There are valid nitpicks in the film, but overall it's well worth seeing.

Couldn't agree more. Well worth a watch.

Saw the movie today and enjoyed it. I think the last movie I went to movies to see was Master & Commander so this was a very new experience. Had to pick the seat and I could have slept in the recliner I sat in. The movie gave you a very good idea of what it was like at Dunkirk.

My wife and I watched it this week. Very interesting film, and I thought the air combat sequences were outstanding. We liked the air story arc and the civilian boat story arc, but found the infantry story confusing (mainly because the actors playing the infantrymen were very hard for us to tell apart.)

Not a perfect film in my opinion, but kudos for trying some unusual storytelling choices and again for the great Spitfire vs. 109 battle scenes.

Wife and I say this over Christmas and loved it. The different perspectives on the same action was very interesting.

Watched it with SWMBO last weekend and overall we both thought it was well done.
She was glad for the absence of the usual 'blood and guts' shown in war movies. I had told her in advance that reviews and comments had mentioned that.

I thought they should have shown some of the larger ships actually making it away from the beach - it made it seem like everything was sunk if it wasn't one of 'The Little Boats of Britain'. It was also interesting that one never saw a German and they were referred to as 'the enemy'.

I also did not get the feeling of as many men on the beaches as there should have been, based on actual pictures of the event.
The aerial scenes were good, but, again, it felt like there were only 3 or 4 planes in the whole battle.

I will watch it again when a friend or two comes to town and will probably notice more that I may have missed the first time around.

It was ok . Didn't enjoy as much as I hoped I would . No real reason just didn't.

@Stumptonian: I don't know how accurate this is, but I read that one reason the air battles used relatively few planes was because the movie was shot with all practical effects-no CGI!

In situations where they couldn't get working aircraft (like the Heinkel bombers) the article I read said they used remote controlled models from a distance.

Again, don't know if the article I read was correct, but if so, it does make the Spitfire battle scenes more impressive to me.

Saw it with my gaming buddy the first day it was on. Great picture, no doubt about it. Historically correct or not, a perfect show anyway.

I realize that - watched all the special extras on the DVD (and so did SWMBO, which means she was definitely interested in it )
I did enjoy the air combat. Just wish there had been more. I definitely prefer real over CGI

Very nice YouTube video! Thanks! Cost me a bucket of popcorn for the elves! Got to see the movie in NZ with the "boyz" on its premier there, awesome!

I enjoyed seeing it, and appreciated the use of real aircraft for the flight scenes... but found the resulting representation of air combat underwhelming. The thing is, there's no way they're going to fly these priceless antiques in any sort of real representation of air combat, with high speeds, heavy G forces, and genuine tactical maneuvering, so instead we got what we got.

It wasn't bad per se - and certainly a heck of a lot better than pure fantasy treatments of air combat as seen in Flyboys and Red Tails and The Red Baron - but it was, let's just say, rather sedate maneuvering.

The films that use CGI do too much, and make it look unrealistic, and now this film has used real planes, but due to their nearly irreplaceable value, have done too little with them. I believe reality was somewhere in between, and besides films like Howard Hughes' Hells Angels or Battle of Britain or even Top Gun, we rarely see real aircraft flown anywhere near their real capabilities on-screen.

    I really enjoyed Dunkirk.

Few WWII movies are perfect, but it's nice to get some service in a movie that hasn't been Hollywood'ed to a charred corpse about WWII battles that don't get a lot of screen time.

I also appreciated that a movie totally about the Commonwealth and non-American Allies got some big screen time from a big name director. That doesn't happen very often.

Thing is I don't get the "why??" with CGI. It's easy to do CGI with realistic and proper maneuvering -heck IL-2, DCS, etc. already have the flight models down in consumer products. And it still looks good. Do Hollywood audiences really go that nuts over toyish physics-defying flying?

Given how crappy the reviews are for most aeroplane movies making heavy use of CGI, I don't get it. Maybe we're just critical because we're aviation buffs.

OT note, if anyone wants a modern Top Gun using real planes, check out Les Chevaliers du Ciel. Story is merely passable but it has some of the best aerial cinematography I've ever seen in a movie:

Historically accurate? No. Neither is Shakespeare's "History" Richard III. Dunkirk may not be as lofty as Richard III but it is also less half made up. Where I am going is that I think Dunkirk is great film from a creative arts perspective, and stands on those legs with the historical reference as it's backdrop. I also get why this movie does fall short of what really happened at Dunkirk.

Do we need a new thread for Darkest Hour?

I have to say for the most part the movie was very interesting. I wasn't the "normal blood and guts" military movie, which was actually pretty good thing. Like most of the comments on here about the "dogfight"scenes being rather bland, I have to agree with who ever decided not to over work the 70+ year old beast. They were good in there own right. I'm not a Spitfire?Hurricane fan, but it was really fascinating to see the "real" planes go at it. I gave me a realistic mental picture of what we could only dream of as we play the game. An excellent movie?? No, not by any means, but for what it was, it was a really good movie. Spoiler ALERT:I would have chunked 'ol boy over the side of the boat after what he did to that young man. Just saying......... I will watch it again.
